Good full ruby-red. Expressive aromas of plum, tar, licorice, herbs and light weediness. Offers good mid-palate sweetness, with subtle notes of smoke, herbs, meat and menthol. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins.

The 2002 Merlot Michael Black Vineyard has a saturated bluish/black color and a big, sweet nose of espresso roast, blackberries, cherries, and smoke. It is long, opulent, with amazing concentration, a huge mid-palate, and a blockbuster finish. Good medium ruby. Riper aromas of crushed cassis and minerals. Sweet, dense and deep, with a solid core of dark berry, chocolate and spice flavors. A fruit bomb of a merlot, and considerably more pliant than the 2001 version.

Paul Hobbs is one of California wine’s biggest names. Twice named Wine Personality of the Year by Robert Parker, he joined Robert Mondavi in 1977, worked at Opus One and Simi before setting up his eponymous winery in 1991.
