Deep garnet colored, the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District strides out of the glass with straightforward notes of smoked meats, tobacco, sautéed herbs and damp soil over a core of prunes, raisin cake and leather. Medium-bodied, the palate is wearing a good amount of savory characters with a chewy texture and plenty of freshness on the herb-laced finish.

Full red-ruby. Cassis and mocha on the slightly roasted nose, along with a note of nutty oak. Sweet, fine-grained and intense, with currant, truffle, earthy underbrush and tobacco flavors flattened by a slightly tired hint of walnut. The tongue-dusting tannins are a bit dry. This is more concentrated than the basic Napa Valley bottling but not as fresh.
The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District is a gorgeous wine. Black cherries, spices, licorice and mint are some of the notes that first take shape in the glass. There is a lovely white flower note that runs through the wine that adds freshness and vibrancy. Plums, tar and smoke wrap around the firm finish. This is one of the few 2009s here that could use another year or two in bottle. It is a fine effort.
