Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2022-2032, Neal Martin, Mar 2023

The 2001 Haut-Bergeron did not show so well the last time I tasted it from a half-bottle. Much better in a proper-sized bottle! Mandarin, dried honey, wild peach and slightly petrolly on the nose. The palate is well-defined with ginger and clove on the entry, spicy and vibrant, fully mature with an Aszú like finish. This is perfect to drink now. Tasted at a vertical at the château.

The 2001 Haut-Bergeron was tasted from a half-bottle; nevertheless, it is a distinctly deeper color than its peers. The nose is rather oxidized and missing some freshness. The palate is better than expected, displaying an Aszú-like quality, and quite viscous in the mouth, but low in acidity and cloying. Rosewater notes appear on the finish. Drink soon, as this appears to be fading quicker than I estimated.

The Haut-Bergeron 2001 has a generous bouquet with apricot and mandarin scents – a little volatility in the background, but that just seems to give it "lift". The palate is well balanced with spicy orange zest and peach notes, crisp acidity and a satisfying, cohesive finish. It should continue to drink well over the next decade. Check out this lesser known Sauternes.
