Brilliant ruby-red. Spice- and smoke-accented cherry, red berry and lavender aromas pick up a suggestion of musky herbs with air. Silky, sweet and densely packed, offering bitter cherry and black raspberry flavors and a refreshing twist of white pepper that sharpens the fruit. Fine-grained tannins give grip to the energetic, spicy finish, which shows excellent focus and persistence.

While I absolutely loved the first few vintages of the En Gobelet, I've yet to be as "wowed" by the latest releases. A blend of 34% Grenache, 31% Mourvedre, 19% Syrah, 11% Counoise and a splash of Tannat, it offers lots of underbrush, leather, cracked pepper and roasted herbs to go with a solid core of black raspberry and blackberry fruit. Medium-bodied, supple, rounded and nicely balanced, it tastes like a very good Cotes du Rhone, yet is about three times the price.
Floral and spice overtones add nuance to a core of explosive fruit in the 2013 En Gobelet. This is another wine that impresses for its pure power and intensity. At the same time, the 2013 is going to need time in barrel and likely in bottle as well to fully come together. Today, it is the wine's overall structure that dominates.
