Saturated ruby. Black raspberry, smoked meat and bacon fat on the varietally accurate nose. Then a bit hard-edged and youthfully compressed, with firm acids keeping the wild black fruit and bitter chocolate flavors from expanding. This has a sweet/sour quality like hard candy. Shows limited flesh and volume today: will this grow more pliant with aging?

The dark ruby/purple-colored 2005 Syrah Alder Springs Vineyard Homage to Ed Olivera reveals too much new oak in the nose, and comes across as more monolithic.
