The 2011 Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs is attractive, but like most wines of this vintage, it is somewhat compact and vegetal. There is good energy throughout. Even so, I would prefer to drink it over the next few years, before the green notes become more prominent than they already are. The 2022 is a blend of fruit from Mareuil, Mailly and Aÿ, whereas in most vintages the Blanc de Noirs is a blend of 6-7 villages. In 2011 Philipponnat did not bottle their 1522. Instead, the best of that fruit was used here. Disgorged January 2018. Dosage is 4.25 grams per liter.

The 100% Pinot Noir 2011 Blanc de Noirs Extra-Brut is the third vintage after 2008 and 2009 and is sourced in premier and grand crus, mainly from own vineyards in Mareuil and Avenay, plus purchased grapes from Mailly and Sillery. The wine opens with a very clear, delicate, pretty deep and spicy bouquet of red (currant) fruit intermixed with vegetal notes. The palate is medium-weight, round and firmly structured yet finessed and elegant. Tasted at the domaine in April 2018.
