Few bottles foment such vivid and indelible memories as the 1962 Grands-Échézeaux from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. The last bottle I had the pleasure of enjoying almost 20 years ago still ranks amongst the greatest I have ever consumed. That bottle had a large ullage, whereas this came directly from the Domaine. It has an ethereal bouquet with heavenly focus, displaying shimmering red fruit laced with pain d'épices and light undergrowth. The 1962 redefines transparency. The palate is a little richer than expected—perfectly balanced, with an almost mellifluous texture. Hints of rosewater grace the long finish. This wine is epitome of "haunting beauty”.

The 1962 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru is actually an old note from 2004, but it is included because personally it is a significant bottle. Purchased at a bargain price because of a 6-7cm ullage, it was opened to thank a friend designing the first incarnation of Wine-Journal. Forewarned that it might be undrinkable, on the contrary it remains as vivid today as it was back then. Heavenly on the nose with black fruit and hints of shucked oyster shell, the delineation is remarkable. The palate is beautifully defined, powerful and yet so weightless, it is the epitome of mature Pinot Noir. Transcendental. Tasted at home in West Norwood.
