Good bright, deep red-ruby. Stunted nose hints at raspberry and mocha. Then very ripe, lush and rich, with highly concentrated, sappy flavors of sweet blackberry and spices. A step up in richness from the Ryan, but a bit less refined. Finishes ripely tannic and very long, though a bit clenched today. A major mouthful of pinot noir.

One of the most profound Pinot Noirs I tasted in California was the 2001 Pinot Noir Finn. An extraordinary perfume of fresh mushrooms interwoven with smoke, raspberry and strawberry liqueur in addition to gamy and floral notes results in remarkably Burgundian, complex aromatic fireworks. Dense, rich, and medium to full-bodied, with profound complexity, loads of sweet fruit, ripe tannin, and nicely integrated acidity as well as oak, this terrific Pinot is best drunk over the next 3-4 years. Good full red. Deeper aromas of black cherry, strawberry, raspberry and smoke. Higher-toned and wilder in the mouth, with more verve. Juicy, sappy flavors of spicy red berries, mocha and earth. Finishes firmly tannic but not hard, with good spicy persistence. Already sweet and supple, but will be better for 12 to 18 months of additional bottle aging.
