Good bright ruby-red. Nobly wild aromas and flavors of blackberry compote, smoked meat, licorice and violet. Silky, dense and opulent but with perfectly harmonious acidity giving the seamless mid-palate an intensely sappy character. Finishes with an impressive spine of acids and refined tannins but comes off as a bit less tough than the Bonnes-Mares and Clos de la Roche. Splendid grand cru.

The 2010 Mazis-Chambertin is totally sublime. It boasts a striking inner perfume of floral dark fruit, mint, sweet herbs and honey. Silky tannins frame the dark fruit through to the enveloping, refined finish. This isn't the biggest or richest of these 2010s, but it may very well be the most elegant. Hints of white flowers add the last layers of complexity.

Silky tannins frame the dark fruit through to the enveloping, refined finish. This isn’t the biggest or richest of these 2010s, but it may very well be the most elegant. Hints of white flowers add the last layers of complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030. Olivier Bernstein is one of the younger generation of micro-negociants who owns no vineyards, but rather sources fruit from a variety of vineyards. In just a few years Bernstein has put together an impressive collection of wines from some of the Cote d’Or’s most prestigious appellations. Bernstein describes 2010 as a vintage with a lot of millerandage (shot berries). The 2010s were vinified with 50% stems and the malos finished in July, which is fairly standard for the year. None of the 2010s had been racked at the time of my visit in late November 2011 and bottling was planned for March and April 2012. Stylistically, these are fleshy, generous wines that stand apart for their textural depth. A Becky Wasserman Selection, Le Serbet, imported by: Fine Vines LLC, Melrose Park. IL; tel. (708) 343-6702

Very fine and perfumed. Fine boned and very refreshing and exciting indeed. Tannins a little marked on the very end but altogether something very interesting. Racy. (JR)
