Things get much more interesting as the 1985 Solaia is poured. What a wine. Bold, luscious and full-bodied, the 1985 is magnificent. More importantly, the 1985 is in a perfect spot to deliver maximum drinking pleasure. Readers lucky enough to taste well-stored bottles will find a hedonistic, dramatic Solaia.

The 1985 Solaia kicks off a flight of Early Classics. I have had the 1985 twice recently and it has always been impressive. It is also very much a wine of its era, which is to say if anything, it is too polished. This was an era in which wines were squeaky-clean. Well-stored bottles still have plenty of fruit although further upside appears to be limited.

Antinori's counterpart to the famous S assicaia 1985 made by their Incisa della Rocchetta cousin at Tenuta San Guido. Very dark crimson still. Strong black flavours such as liquorice and tapenade. This wine clearly comes from another, much more modern, era than that which spawned the much older wines I have just been tasting. Very neat and informed by the strictness of Cabernet Sauvignon – without the heat and ripeness of today's Maremma reds. Well balanced and complete though not as voluptuous as the Sassicaia. Just a little tiny bit mean on the end. (JR)

Very deep ruby indeed with some evolution on the rim. Very winning ripeness on the nose – thick. round and v slightly formless but a very winning drink. Eases its way into your favour. Dry finish with lots of ripeness on the front palate. Very respectable. Lots of tannin still in evidence. (JR)
