Deep, bright red. Black cherry, licorice, minerals and roasted oak on the nose. Suave, minerally and detailed, with firm structure and an almost medicinal austerity. Finishes with substantial chewy tannins and a note of blackberry. In a tight phase today: I would expect this to put on weight as it ages. (I'm sorry not to be able to provide notes on the Faiveley 2005s. As I finished tasting a full set of samples at the end of my November tour from a vintage that Erwan Faiveley described as "classic," I mentioned that although I had tasted some standouts, such as Echezeaux, Clos Vougeot, Mazis-Chambertin, Chambertin-Clos de Beze and Clos des Cortons-and, at the premier cru level, the Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d'Orveau and Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges and Les Porets Saint-Georges-I found a number of wines disturbingly tannic and dry. It turns out that my samples had been pulled from barrel nine days before my visit (!). While this is clearly a very strong vintage chez Faiveley, it would not be fair to Faiveley or to IWC readers to publish notes on old samples.)

Saturated ruby color. Very ripe aromas of black cherry, game and oak. Huge and mouthfilling but also quite penetrating, with liqueur-like black cherry fruit. Very dense and powerful but not at all sugary. Finishes compellingly long and sweet, with major ripe, slow-mounting tannins. A monster in the making.
Dark and brooding. Very intense with lots of clenching tannins. Very introvert and mossy. Almost too young and inexpressive to judge. (JR)
