The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Champonnets 1er Cru has a strange nose that veers more towards southern Rhône Grenache than Pinot Noir. It's a bit sickly sweet, perhaps over-chaptalised? A hint of tinned prune in the mix. Likewise, the palate is excessively sweet and saccharine with sour cherry and ferrous notes leading to a muddled finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Generous and enveloping, the 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnet mingles aromas of raspberries, plums and wild strawberries with scents of baking spices and orange zest, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate.
The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Champonnets 1er Cru seems to miss quite a bit of fruit concentration on the nose. Clearly not playing ball today. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly green tannins, modest depth but I find this attenuates sharply on the finish. I prefer the Evocelles.
