Domaine Leroy's 2005 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brulées is a brillant young wine, though it's still the better part of a decade away from even early maturity. Unfurling in the glass with a deep bouquet of black cherries, wild berries, smoked meats, espresso roast, blood orange and exotic spices, framed by a deft touch of new oak, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with an immensely concentrated core of fruit, elegantly muscular structuring tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, carnal finish.

Difficult to read at the moment although underneath there is no shortage of rich, yes, almost burnt fruit. This one needs a lot of a lot of time – a bit surly at the moment. Sinewy build. (JR)
Good bright ruby-red. Wild dark fruits, smoke and minerals on the nose. Enticingly sweet on the palate, but not as explosive as the Beaux-Monts and less expressive today. But ripe, harmonious acids carry the finish. For her part, Lalou Bize says this is more flatteur today than the Beaux-Monts but I find the tannins more present. And the Beaux-Monts is finer.
