Punteggio 84/100 · Robert Parker, Dec 1998

I do not understand the 1994 Merlot Journey. The color is a dark ruby/purple, but the wine's aromas are monochromatic, consisting of new oak and grapy, berry fruit. It is tough-textured, with medium body and good concentration. But may I ask ... where is the complexity and profound depth one expects from a $150 wine! I also opened a 1992 Matanzas Creek Merlot from my cellar, and left the bottle open for several days to see if I had missed something. The 1994 Journey did not develop, and the 1992 was unquestionably superior. Tel. (707) 528-6464

Saturated ruby-red. Extraordinarily complex aromas of boysenberry, grilled meat, green tea and star anise; unmistakable notes of spicy Taransaud barrels. Similar flavors in the mouth; very subtle, very young and highly nuanced. This vibrant but backward wine offers lovely flesh but will need some time to unfold. More structured than the regular '94, which rated a year ago. Terrific harmonious acidity gives the wine delineation and grip. Finishes firmly tannic and extremely long. Great potential.
