The 2001 Aglianico del Vulture La Firma is, as always, the richer of the two, riper, sweeter, and more expansive on the nose, more ample and concentrated on the palate with elegant tannins and an inner core of strength that suggests that the wine, already approachable, will still be drinking well in 2015. Deep ruby-red. Complex, somewhat Pauillac-like nose melds black cherry, cedar, licorice, oregano and shoe polish. Dense and broad-shouldered, with deep, chewy flavors of medicinal black cherry, bitter chocolate and sexy oak, all lifted by a floral aspect. Large-scaled and solidly structured wine, with 14.5% alcohol.
