Red-ruby, a bit lighter in color than Lignier's premier crus from Chambolle and Morey. Pure, perfumed aromas of red cherry and flowers. Very suave and silky in the mouth, with a lovely restrained sweetness. The perfumed red fruit flavors show excellent precision and verve. Finishes very long and gripping, with fine but firm tannins. Lignier says this is closed today, but I find it easier to taste now than it was from barrel a year ago. Still, a 2002 like this is likely to shut down over the coming 12 to 18 mont hs.

Waxy blackberries, cracked black pepper, and spices are found in the aromatic profile of the fleshy, medium-bodied 2002 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Combottes. A wine of deep concentration, power, and firm structure, it is a masculine, muscular counterpoint to Lignier’s Baudes. Its sappy black fruit-dominated flavors linger in its exceptionally long finish. Medium ruby-red. Pure aromas of cherry, minerals and licorice. Juicy, minerally and tightly wound, with sharply delineated flavors of cassis, minerals and licorice. Very penetrating and very backward. Finishes long and firmly tannic. This will need six or seven years of bottle aging.
