Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2014-2019, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jan 2014

The 2011 Chardonnay Heintz Vineyard is a wine of pure grace. Lemon, white flowers and pastry emerge in the glass, but the 2011 is above all else a wine of sublime texture. Deceptively medium in body, the 2011 impresses for its length, energy and focus. Tasted next to the Porter-Bass, the Heintz comes across as rounder, softer and more accessible early. This is an excellent choice for drinking over the next few years.

The 2011 Chardonnay Heintz Vineyard is pure, steely and beautifully delineated. Lemon, pastry and white flowers all come together in this focused, totally harmonious Chardonnay. A drop dead-gorgeous wine, the 2011 is a great expression of site and vintage.

(made from 30-year-old Wente clone vines): Pale gold. Heady, mineral-dominated pear, Meyer lemon and anise aromas, with a smoky overtone. Juicy and precise, with excellent thrust to its ripe citrus and orchard fruit flavors. Shows intense mineral and floral notes on the finish, which is taut, linear and impressively long. I'll bet this tensile chardonnay will reward at least a few more years of patience.

Anticipated maturity: 2013-2019. Proprietor John Raytek is one of this country’s most promising young winemakers. His professional resume includes a stint as sommelier at the Little Nell in Aspen. Later he was assistant winemaker at Copain and also spent time at Rhys. Raytek is married to Phoebe Bass, whose family owns the Porter-Bass Vineyard, but adds he gets no preferential treatment when it comes to buying fruit! The 2011 Chardonnays and Pinots are both dazzling. I tasted the 2011 Chardonnays from tank just prior to bottling. Raytek ages his Chardonnays for 12 months in oak (with no lees stirring) followed by 5-8 months in oak, a style of elevage preferred by a number of top estates in California and Burgundy. The Pinots are all made with some amount of whole clusters, usually around 40-45%, but they are totally integrated and virtually impossible to detect in the wines. I also had a chance to re-taste the 2010s from bottle. Those wines were just as fabulous as they were from barrel, if not a little better. Simply put, I can’t recommend these wines highly enough.
