Ten years after the vintage, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape is beginning a gentle descent. It still boasts attractive aromas of peppered meat, vanilla and ripe cherries and ample weight and silky tannins on the palate, but it turns tart and the fruit is thinning on the finish. Drink up.

Brilliant ruby-red. Aromas of dark berries, spicecake, licorice and potpourri on the highly perfumed nose. Stains the palate with energetic black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors, with a zesty mineral element giving spine to the wine. The floral quality comes back strong on the finish, which features supple tannins and extremely persistent spiciness.
(60% grenache, 30% syrah and 8% mourvedre, with bits and pieces of all the other varieties): Deep ruby. Cherry, blackberry, peppery spices and a touch of garrigue on the nose. Displays sappy dark berry flavors on the palate, which is given lift by juicy acidity. Silky tannins add grip to a spicy and nicely persistent finish. In an elegant style that should show well in its youth but also appears to have the balance to age.
