I vini Reynaud sono leggendari. Pronuncia "Rayas" a una certa gente e ne svengono. La storia dell'impero Reynaud 
Nel 1880, Albert Reynaud, notaio di Avignone, perse l'udito a soli 45 anni. Non più in grado di esercitare la professione di avvocato, acquistò una tenuta a Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in una zona chiamata Rayas, dove trascorse i suoi giorni coltivando viti, albicocche e ulivi. Nel 1910, suo figlio Louis Reynaud assunse la gestione della tenuta. Louis aveva studiato agraria ad Angers ed era particolarmente interessato alla viticoltura. Sradicò alberi per piantare nuovi vigneti e imbottigliò il primo vino della proprietà nel 1920, usando il nome "Rayas", il nome della foresta presente sul loro appezzamento di terreno. Fu l'inizio del Rayas come lo conosciamo oggi. 
Louis aggiunse notoriamente la dicitura "Premier Grand Cru" alle etichette del Rayas, una classificazione autoproclamata del vino, sfidando notoriamente le regole della denominazione (introdotte nel 1936). Conquistando la reputazione e le vendite della proprietà, iniziò a espandere l'attività. Le vecchie vigne di Rayas, piantate su terreni sabbiosi, esposte a nord/nord-est, circondate da una pineta, producono vini di eccezionale eleganza e finezza aromatica, vini dal profumo ammaliante, dal colore pallido e dalla delicatezza quasi da Pinot, ma con una persistenza e una longevità fenomenali. 
Jacques era noto per la sua eccentricità. Recluso, felice tra le vigne e mai incline ad accogliere visitatori, si diceva che a volte si nascondesse in un fosso per evitare giornalisti o altri addetti ai lavori. La sua avversione per la ribalta non fece che accrescere il fascino dei vini. Morì piuttosto improvvisamente nel 1997, mentre faceva shopping di scarpe a Courthézon. Non avendo figli, suo nipote Emmanuel, figlio di Bertrand, che fino a quel momento aveva gestito Ch. des Tours dal 1989, ereditò sia Rayas che Fonsalette, prendendo le redini di tutte e tre le proprietà. 
La transizione tra Jacques ed Emmanuel non fu graduale, poiché Emmanuel ristrutturò la tenuta e ripiantò parti del sito, ma all'inizio degli anni 2000 la qualità era di nuovo all'altezza del nome Reynaud. Lo stile è cambiato tra le generazioni e, mentre i vini di Jacques erano più strutturati e solidi, Emmanuel predilige espressioni più sensuali e profumate. Negli ultimi due decenni, poco è cambiato nelle proprietà Reynaud: lo status mitico dei vini si è confermato solo con ogni nuova uscita. La nuova generazione, i figli di Emmanuel, Louis Damien e Benoît, è già coinvolta, pronta a continuare l'eredità di famiglia. La filosofia Reynaud 
L'approccio di Reynaud è vecchio stile: qui regna la tradizione. La monocoltura moderna non è il metodo – con varie colture in tutto il tenute e biodiversità alimentata da ampie fasce boschive. Le viti – tutte ad alberello, molte con un'età significativa – sono coltivate esattamente come sono sempre state, biologicamente con input minimi, arate a cavallo. 
L'uva è tutta raccolta a mano, i grappoli interi fermentano con lieviti indigeni in vasche di cemento. Da quando Emmanuel ha preso in mano la situazione, le parcelle sono state vinificate separatamente. Le macerazioni sono delicate, generalmente inferiori alle due settimane con un singolo rimontaggio al giorno. L'invecchiamento avviene in grandi botti di rovere vecchio, senza l'utilizzo di legno nuovo in nessuna delle proprietà – anzi, il demi-muid o foudre più giovane della tenuta potrebbe avere ben 30 anni. Le aggiunte di solforosa sono minime, con solo una piccola quantità durante la fermentazione e un'aggiunta finale all'imbottigliamento, con i vini imbottigliati senza chiarifica e senza filtrazione. Il metodo è la massima semplicità, incentrato sull'espressione di ogni sito – e i risultati parlano da soli. Le cantine sono rustici edifici agricoli, che offrono solo i requisiti di base, senza l'impiego di tecnologie moderne e, visti i vini prodotti, non necessarie. 
Il Grenache è il cuore di tutti i vini Reynaud: l'uva che prospera nel loro terroir ed è la magia del Rayas. Oltre al Rayas, il Cinsault viene utilizzato per conferire eleganza e morbidezza, mentre il Syrah è stato a lungo evitato, utilizzato solo a Ch. de Fonsalette. Louis Reynaud credeva che la varietà fosse originaria del Rodano settentrionale e, a parte la piccola porzione che arrivava nelle Côtes du Rhône, il resto del Syrah veniva venduto in grandi quantità sotto il suo regno (spesso ai ristoranti locali, che lo usavano nelle loro salse). La cuvée Côtes du Rhône Syrah fu introdotta solo sotto la guida di Jacques Reynaud, inizialmente venduta ai ristoranti che ne avevano apprezzato la qualità nelle loro salse. La famiglia Reynaud comprende tre tenute distinte: Rayas, Fonsalette e Ch. des Tours, sebbene Fonsalette non abbia una propria cantina. 
Ch. Rayas 
Rayas è la tenuta originale dei Reynaud, acquistata nel 1880, e prende il nome dal clima. Nella parte settentrionale di Châteauneuf-du-Pape si trovano i 12 ettari di vigneti, circondati da 11 ettari di foresta. Dimenticate i tipici galets roulés o pudding stones della regione, noti per la loro capacità di trattenere il calore: Rayas sorge su terreni rossi, ricchi di ferro e sabbiosi, su terreni argillosi più ricchi. I terreni sono poveri e le viti ad alberello sono piantate a bassa densità, con appena 2.500 ceppi per ettaro, con una resa di appena 10-20 hl/ha. Negli anni '80 sono stati effettuati significativi reimpianti, il che significa che le viti hanno ora un'età media di 40 anni, sebbene vi siano ancora alcuni esemplari sopravvissuti dagli anni '40. 
L'esposizione a nord del sito si combina con l'influenza delle aree boschive, offrendo ombra e umidità, prolungando la stagione vegetativa e preservando la freschezza dei vini. I Reynaud sono tra gli ultimi a vendemmiare, spesso solo a ottobre/novembre, fino a due mesi dopo i loro vicini. I vini che ne derivano, tuttavia, non sono caratterizzati da una maturazione intensa, ma da eleganza e finezza. 
Mentre Châteauneuf consente 13 varietà rosse, a Rayas troverete solo Grenache Noir, con due ettari dedicati alle uve bianche: Grenache Blanc e Clairette. I vigneti di Grenache possono essere suddivisi in tre sezioni: Le Levant, Le Coeur e Le Couchant, ciascuna delle quali prende il nome dalla sua esposizione al sole, rispettivamente all'alba, al culmine e al tramonto. Scrivendo per The World of Fine Wine, William Kelley descrive così le tre componenti del vigneto: "Le Levant è il più floreale ed etereo, e contribuisce alla spina dorsale del vino; Le Coeur è il più completo, e contribuisce allo scheletro del Rayas; e Le Couchant, con i suoi toni fruttati più ricchi e simili a una composta, apporta la parte grassa". 
Tutta la raccolta avviene a mano. Il Grenache viene mantenuto sui raspi, i grappoli interi vengono pigiati prima di una delicata macerazione per un massimo di due settimane (un rimontaggio al giorno) e della fermentazione con lieviti indigeni. Il vino viene pressato e invecchiato in vecchie botti di rovere per poco meno di due anni.
La delicatezza e la finezza del vino che ne deriva ricordano la Borgogna più pregiata. Di colore pallido, il Rayas è profondamente aromatico, con incantevoli note floreali e una consistenza eterea e setosa che bilancia l'intensità terrosa e sapida del vino. Ogni anno vengono prodotte tra le 1.200 e le 1.500 casse del fiore all'occhiello Châteauneuf-du-Pape. I vini invecchiano magnificamente e lo stesso Emmanuel consiglia di attendere 20-25 anni prima di aprire una bottiglia di Rayas per apprezzarne appieno l'evoluzione. 
Le uve bianche sono piantate in tre parcelle a Le Levant, che comprendono due ettari. Il Grenache Blanc è stato piantato negli anni '40, '50 e '95, mentre il Clairette è stato piantato nel 1986. Fermentato in vecchi foudre (da 80 a 100 anni), acquistati di seconda mano da Louis Reynaud (nonno di Emmanuel), il Rayas Blanc è un blend 50:50 di Grenache Blanc e Clairette, invecchiato in vecchie botti di rovere per circa 11 mesi. Il vino è prodotto in volumi estremamente limitati, con solo circa 400 casse prodotte per ogni annata. Ricco ma equilibrato, questo raro bianco è immensamente profumato con note di mandorla e fiori bianchi, intensamente minerale e strutturato, e può invecchiare per almeno un decennio. 
Il Pignan è talvolta considerato un "secondo vino" a Rayas, ma in realtà proviene da un sito specifico della tenuta, un unico appezzamento di due ettari circondato da pini sul confine settentrionale della proprietà con terreni meno sabbiosi. Anche il Grenache in purezza, prodotto esattamente allo stesso modo a Rayas, offre un'espressione più immediata e accessibile dello stile Rayas, pur mantenendo profumi, purezza e struttura simili, ed è comunque in grado di invecchiare a lungo. I vini Rayas vengono tutti commercializzati solo al momento del loro ingresso nella finestra di consumo, mentre i rossi spesso escono dalla tenuta solo oltre un decennio dopo la vendemmia. 
Ch. de Fonsalette 
L'"ultima" aggiunta alla galassia Reynaud, Ch. de Fonsalette fu acquistata da Louis Reynaud nel 1945. La proprietà è ampia, con una superficie totale di 120 ettari, ma con 12 ettari di vigneti tra boschi, terreni agricoli e uliveti, a nord di Orange, a Lagarde-Paréol. Oggi rientra in gran parte nella denominazione Côtes du Rhône Villages Massif d'Uchaux (istituita nel 2005), tuttavia i vini sono tutti etichettati come Côtes du Rhône. Più a nord, il microclima è più fresco rispetto a Rayas e, stilisticamente, i vini sono più sobri di quelli di Ch. des Tours, ad esempio, ma non così eterei come quelli di Rayas. 
I terreni qui sono molto diversi da quelli di Rayas, con ghiaia, sabbia e puddinga rossa. I vigneti sono coltivati ​​a Grenache, Cinsault e Syrah per i rossi, e a Grenache Blanc, Clairette e Marsanne per i bianchi. Le viti sono generalmente vecchie, con la più vecchia piantata nel 1929. 
La filosofia in vigna e in cantina è esattamente la stessa di Rayas e, poiché la proprietà non dispone di una cantina propria, anche i vini vengono prodotti a Rayas. La gamma di Ch. de Fonsalette comprende tre vini. Il Côtes du Rhône Rouge è un blend di 50% Grenache, 35% Cinsault e 15% Syrah, la cui elevata percentuale di Cinsault conferisce al vino una particolare intensità e finezza aromatica: un vino che sussurra e cattura. Esiste un secondo rosso, un Côtes du Rhône Syrah, 100% Syrah, un vino strutturato, dai profumi fruttati scuri, che offre una potenza contenuta e una profondità discreta. La Pialade 
Questo vino rappresenta una piccola anomalia nella gamma Reynaud. Prodotto solo in alcune annate, La Pialade Côtes du Rhône è vinificato e invecchiato a Rayas, con parcelle declassate provenienti da Rayas o Ch. de Fonsalette. L'assemblaggio è tipicamente composto da 85% Grenache, 15% Cinsault e 5% Syrah. Prodotto in piccole quantità, e ancora più raro dato che non viene prodotto ogni anno, è spesso descritto come un "Rayas quotidiano" – più aperto nello stile, ma può eguagliare il Rayas per sottigliezza e delicatezza, anche se non ha la stessa profondità. 
Ch. des Tours 
Acquistato da Louis Reynaud alla fine degli anni '30, Ch. Château des Tours è la tenuta di origine di Emmanuel Reynaud, che ne ha preso in carico la gestione dal padre Bertrand nel 1989. Châteauneuf-du-Pape has a long history, becoming the new home for the Pope in the 14th century, but its prestige as a wine region is comparatively short. Although it is France’s oldest appellation (the first to be officially classified in 1923), the wines only really gained notoriety in the second half of the 20th century. More recently, its full-bodied, fruity style found appeal among American critics – namely Robert Parker, who helped increase its following across the Atlantic. But, despite the success of estates such as Ch. Rayas, there is little fanfare around the region. Isabel Ferrando’s dynamism, therefore, is a refreshing change. Her story is one of revolution rather than evolution. With every step in her career, she has made bold decisions – decisions that have brought significant attention, praise and a legion of fans. For her, such an approach aligns neatly with the philosophy of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. “The only limit is to respect the appellation. That is the only limit,” says Ferrando. With 13 permitted varieties (or 22 if you count both white and red grapes) and five very different, distinct soils, countless expressions of the appellation are possible – and, for her, this is why it’s a very modern appellation. Everyone is given the freedom to “paint their picture”. Although the region might be famous for its galets roulés (large round pebbles that reflect heat and add to ripeness), this is just one of its terroirs. “There are five different soils in Châteauneuf – chalk, limestone, clay, sand, galet stones that each have a strong influence on the appellation,” she explains. “There is one singularity,” she admits, “and that is a lot of fruit.” She feels that Châteauneuf is united by its “fruity but serious” profile – however, beyond that, there is incredible variety – from more floral to darker, more savoury styles. “The vines on clay produce a fatness in the wine. The sandy soils bring a silky texture and tenderness to the tannins. The chalk gives a sensation of powder,” she says, highlighting how each soil type contributes to the final wine – providing a palette for any winemaker to produce a wine that fits their sensibility. This freedom made the region a perfect fit for Ferrando – who decided to give up her job in banking to become a winemaker 20 years ago. Then a new mother, she initially thought that being her own boss would allow her to spend more time with her family. That didn’t actually happen, she admits, “But when you become a mother or father, you become someone else – you look at life differently. I wanted to go back to nature,” she says. “I didn’t want to raise my daughter in a city. I was born in the countryside, and I needed that for my daughter.” After training for a year in Gigondas under Dominique Ay (at Domaine Raspail-Ay) she found a domaine for sale in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and jumped at the opportunity. She might have been new to the region, a woman in a male-dominated industry with no background in winemaking, but that wasn’t going to put her off. Fortunately, she made some good friends – most notably the late legendary Châteauneuf-du-Pape producer Henri Bonneau who was instrumental in the establishment of Domaine Saint-Préfert. When she arrived, the vineyards were not in good shape, with many vines diseased and in need of replanting. Traditionally, producers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape blend plots together to capture the complexities of the different soils and varieties etc. But, if she was to make a wine of quality, this was not possible for Ferrando. So she identified the best plots and bottled those separately (as her Réserve Auguste Favier and Collection Charles Giraud cuvées), while she set about replanting the rest of the vineyards. The young fruit from her new vines was dedicated to her Cuvée Classique Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Single-vineyard bottlings were quite a radical move in the appellation – but such was the quality of these low-production, old-vine bottlings that Ferrando’s wines rapidly earned recognition. She went further to challenge convention in the region, crafting three varietal wines in a region that was built on blends. These cuvées – a Clairette (Cuvée Spéciale Vieilles Clairettes), Cinsault (Cuvée F601) and Grenache (Cuvée Colombis) bottling – are remarkable wines. There is no other 100% Cinsault produced in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.“The Cinsault is absolutely perfect in Saint-Préfert,”, says Ferrando. “Nowhere else in Châteauneuf-du-Pape do you get these floral aromas.” She describes the grape as the Pinot Noir of the Rhône. Production is tiny – limited to just 800 bottles a year – and it is not cheap at £500 a bottle. But, for those lucky enough to taste it, it is beguiling. The Wine Advocate’s Joe Czerwinski rated it as his top discovery of 2020. Her 100% Clairette is another oddity for Châteauneuf-du-Pape and almost as rare. Only bottled in magnums (800 a year) – this is a wine that Ferrando believes can age 50 years or more. “Clairette is my vision of white wine in the Southern Rhône.” She wants to counter the claim that white Châteauneuf-du-Pape is fat and fruity. “With Clairette, you can produce very fresh and deep wines,” she says, “it gives a lot of freshness, tension and salinity to the whites.” The wine was inspired by her mentor Henri Bonneau, who convinced Ferrando to bottle these 80-year-old vines separately. In the early days of Saint-Préfert, Ferrando invited Bonneau to a feast of tête de veau – and Bonneau arrived with a magnum of an unlabelled white wine. During the meal, Bonneau started to cry – he told Ferrando that the wine was the last bottle from the cellar made by his father – a 1947 100% Clairette – showing how well good Clairette could age. “It was a very special moment,” notes Ferrando. The wine was incredibly fresh and in perfect condition. He asked Ferrando again to create another 100% Clairette – like his father’s. The first vintage was 2009. Once the wine was picked and fermented Bonneau would come to the winery, taste the wine and insist she not bottle the wine yet. It was not ready. “It was risky,” says Ferrando, “but he insisted.” After 18 months she could hold off no longer and bottled it. Tasting the wine, she was amazed by its tension. It was special. The first magnum of every vintage was given to Bonneau as a thank you. After 20 years in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Ferrando is one of the appellation’s brightest stars. But she hasn’t stopped challenging the status quo. After building one of the most celebrated brands in the appellation, Ferrando overhauled her range in 2020 – discontinuing many wines and changing the estate’s name to Famille Isabel Ferrando. Few people would have the guts to take such a chance, but a meditative period over Covid-19, the death of her husband and the evolution of her vineyards all prompted her next radical change. “The resistance of people to change is apparent, it is comfortable to stay the same,” she admits. But, for Ferrando, she had to change. Over 20 years, she’d nurtured her vineyards back to health, her young vines had reached maturity and her biodynamic farming had brought biodiversity back into her vineyards. “The vineyards changed and so the wines had to change too,” she explains. Ferrando now had the quality of fruit to be able to produce a single, flagship Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvée – a wine that represented her terroir and her winemaking style. While she still produces her Vieilles Clairettes, F601 Cinsault and Colombis cuvées, she has sacrificed her top-scoring Auguste Favier and Charles Giraud reds to produce what she feels is a true representation of her estate and sensibility. The wine captures her obsession with freshness, balanced with concentration – playing with the different textural qualities of her soils and varieties. With this refreshed focus from the 2020 vintage, Ferrando decided to bottle the wines under Famille Isabel Ferrando – trusting that her customers will follow the wines under this new name. Ferrando’s daughter seems to have inherited her mother’s revolutionary approach. At 22, she decided to abandon her business studies to tackle a degree in viticulture in Beaune – to the complete shock of her mother. While currently her daughter is learning about winemaking at some of the best estates around the world (including at the likes of Domaine Roulot, Eisele Vineyard, Mullineux and more), she has already had an influence at Saint-Préfert. It was under her guidance that Ferrando hired a young agronomist engineer who has been planting trees and cereal crops in the vineyards to improve biodiversity. Ferrando is clearly excited– still spurred on by change, despite her success. Tasting the new wines from Famille Isabel Ferrando is a wonderful experience. We were among the first to taste the 2021 vintage. The white Châteauneuf-du-Pape is divine – offering such beautiful freshness, salinity and depth, with a finesse that I can’t remember tasting from the region. Ch. Rayas is truly special. The estate’s bottles – with their classic, simple red-and-black design and distinctive triangular neck label – command instant respect amongst afficionados.  Pure Grenache grown on the estate’s sandy soils, this remarkable Châteauneuf-du-Pape transcends its appellation. The wines are perfumed, pretty and elegant, with extraordinary finesse – reminding more of red Burgundy than the bolder wines that the Rhône is often associated with.   The Reynaud family has owned the estate since 1880, and their determined avoidance of any publicity has only increased the property’s allure. Indeed, it’s perhaps this, combined with an off-hands approach in the winery, that means they are one of the few producers to broach the fine wine-natural divide – lauded equally by more traditional fine wine drinkers and the natural wine brigade. Held back and only released once mature, in tiny allocations to markets around the world, the wines are incredibly hard to get hold of.  Earlier this year, we arranged a special dinner tasting through 22 wines from the estate – three of its rare white Châteauneuf-du-Pape and 19 vintages of the flagship red, stretching back to 1990. The vertical offered unique insight into the estate, its character shining through in each wine on show.  Indeed, it was the freshness of the wines that amazed everyone in attendance – including longtime fan and Wine Advocate Deputy Editor William Kelley – stamped on every wine.  Only 400 cases a year are made of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, from two hectares of Clairette and Grenache Blanc, fermented and aged in old oak. White Rhône is a wine for true geeks – and this is an exceptional example – a wine about texture and minerality, almost approaching Grand Cru Chablis in its pure stoniness. Suited perfectly to pairing with all sorts of food, it was clear – even with just three vintages of this unicorn – how well it ages, the 1999 still an outstandingly fresh and fine wine.  Of course, the reds were the main event. Much to everyone’s surprise, it was the so-called “off-vintages”, years that might be deemed “lesser”, that were the most impressive – it was in these bottlings that the singularity of Rayas shone through, over-riding the character of the appellation or year.   The 2008 (given “only” 93 points by Parker back in 2012, upgraded from its original 90 in 2010) was the wine of the night for most people. By contrast, the top-rated 2009 from a blockbuster vintage was impressive, yet the vintage ever so slightly masked the Rayas style – making the wine feel more like another (very good) Châteauneuf-du-Pape.  Overall, the wines showed an effortless timelessness – drinking beautifully now, yet clearly showing the potential to evolve for another 10-15 years or more, depending on the vintage. The more mature wines might show evolution on the nose – with tertiary sous-bois notes – but on the palate, there remained a remarkable energy and vibrancy, with immense clarity of fruit. On several vintages a citrus, almost orange, note shone through, with a mineral thread and juicy acidity. Despite the undoubtedly high alcohol levels, the wines were all amazingly delicate – with no heat from the punchy ABV. And the tannins were effortlessly integrated, remarkably soft despite the structure designed for the long-haul.  Tasting through this line-up was an absolute privilege; for these rightly revered, rare wines are incredible. With no new oak, they are all about the purity and quality of fruit. They show exceptional longevity, an ethereality and easy grace that mesmerises. Ch. Rayas: singular Châteauneuf-du-Pape

La vendemmia 2023 nella Valle del Rodano è stata – come altrove in Francia – calda e secca, ma non così calda come il 2022. L’autunno precedente è stato piovoso, ma da gennaio a marzo 2023 non è praticamente caduta pioggia (infatti, non è caduta una goccia tra il 21 gennaio e il 21 febbraio). 
 La pioggia è arrivata a metà maggio e ci sono stati frequenti piccoli rovesci fino alla fine di giugno, fornendo appena abbastanza acqua per evitare stress idrico significativo. Fioritura e allegagione sono avvenute senza problemi, ma con il proseguire dei rovesci, è comparsa la minaccia di peronospora e marciume nero, che hanno richiesto gestione per evitare danni al raccolto. 
 La fine di agosto ha portato una nuova sfida, con un’ondata di caldo che ha visto le temperature raggiungere i 40-42°C per due settimane. Sono stati segnalati problemi di maturazione bloccata e la morte di giovani viti, ma fortunatamente il clima si è raffreddato e settembre ha offerto un notevole sbalzo termico giornaliero, aiutando a mantenere aromi e acidità in vista della vendemmia. I vini bianchi sono stati raccolti principalmente ad agosto, prima della fine dell’ondata di caldo, mentre la vendemmia dei rossi è avvenuta durante un’estate indiana, con l’ultima uva raccolta intorno a metà ottobre. 
 Il Rodano settentrionale ha affrontato sfide aggiuntive, con grandine a Cornas, Crozes-Hermitage e Saint-Joseph, seguita il 18 settembre da piogge torrenziali – oltre 100 mm in una sola notte. La parte settentrionale dell’appellation ha evitato questo diluvio, con soli 20 mm. Ecco cosa dicono i critici sui vini. Jeb Dunnuck Jeb Dunnuck sta gradualmente pubblicando i suoi rapporti sul Rodano 2023, iniziando da Châteauneuf-du-Pape e Gigondas. 
A Châteauneuf-du-Pape, il 2023 è “un’altra vendemmia solida”, scrive, offrendo “una serie di vini maturi ma non eccessivi, puri e affascinanti con molto da amare”.  Per quanto riguarda Gigondas, ritiene i vini “puri, eleganti e splendidamente equilibrati” – ricordando il 2020 o il 2012, “più freschi ed eleganti dei 2022”. La vendemmia è stata la prima in cui i bianchi erano ammessi nell’appellation, e questi sono altamente raccomandati – “bianchi splendidamente freschi, concentrati ma focalizzati, che mostrano il carattere calcareo e minerale dell’appellation”.

Drink Rhône – John Livingstone-Learmonth Finora, John Livingstone-Learmonth ha pubblicato solo riflessioni sul Rodano settentrionale del 2023, dove lo giudica “buono” ma non “spettacolare”. I rossi hanno “livelli ragionevoli di tannino”, mentre i bianchi, scrive, sono “un acquisto sicuro”. 
 A Cornas, scrive, i vini hanno accessibilità, ma non hanno “struttura o sostanza per competere con le annate longeve come il 2015 o il 2019”. Ritiene che i vini piaceranno a un pubblico moderno, equilibrati con tannini raffinati e i migliori destinati a essere bevuti in oltre 20 anni, sebbene sia consigliato un acquisto selettivo. Decanter – Matt Walls Sia nel nord che nel sud della regione, la vendemmia ottiene un modesto 3,5 su 5 da Matt Walls di Decanter. Sottolinea quanto siano stati “cruciali” i rovesci di maggio e giugno in un anno altrimenti caldo e secco, anche se hanno portato pressione da malattie. 
 A differenza di altre vendemmie recenti, Walls evidenzia l’approcciabilità dei 2023 – perfetti da bere in attesa di altre annate (incluso il 2022). Dice che i vini sono forse comparabili in qualità ai 2022, ma molto più aperti. Nel Rodano settentrionale e meridionale, ritiene che i bianchi siano più coerenti dei rossi – offrendo “intensità, freschezza ed energia”. 
 I rossi sono di qualità più variabile. Nel sud, si trovano “vini succosi, accessibili e da bere giovani”, dice, “maturi con tannini morbidi e acidità gentile”, ma “con espressione dettagliata del terroir”. Pur essendo Châteauneuf-du-Pape eterogeneo (alcuni vini con scarsa acidità e alto grado alcolico), Vinsobres, Lirac, Beaumes de Venise e Rasteau hanno eccelso quest’anno. Consiglia di prestare attenzione ai vini con Mourvèdre in assemblaggio, che portano “benvenuta fibra”. 
 Nel Rodano settentrionale, la situazione è stata più difficile. La grandine ha colpito Saint-Joseph, Cornas e Crozes-Hermitage, e il 18 settembre c’è stata una forte pioggia che ha danneggiato le vigne e causato diluizione. Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu e Saint-Joseph settentrionale hanno evitato la tempesta (20 contro 100 mm altrove) producendo vini “eccellenti”, secondo Walls. Molti rossi del Nord sono freschi e morbidi, ma ci sono “Côte-Rôtie” di gran qualità, e Cornas offre vini “minerali e rinfrescanti” distintamente erbacei. Walls nota anche numerosi bianchi vibranti e freschi, specialmente a Hermitage, dove i bianchi supereranno in longevità i rossi.

Wine Advocate – Yohan Castaing Yohan Castaing non ha ancora pubblicato la copertura completa della vendemmia 2023 nel Rodano, ma ha fornito due rapporti sui bianchi di Châteauneuf-du-Pape e Gigondas, la prima annata in cui i bianchi sono ammessi secondo le regole dell’appellation. In generale, ritiene che i bianchi del Rodano meridionale 2023 siano “aromatici ed eleganti, con acidità brillanti, cuore ben definito e buon potenziale di invecchiamento”. A Châteauneuf, i profili aromatici ricordano il 2022 e considera i vini molto buoni o eccellenti, con acidità che “bilancia la potenza naturale e i tipici livelli di pH elevati delle varietà meridionali”. Lo attribuisce in parte a maggiore precisione in vigneto e cantina, sebbene alcuni vini “mancano ancora di dinamismo e tensione”. 
 I primi bianchi a portare il nome dell’appellation Gigondas (provenienti da circa 12 ettari di vigneti bianchi) offrono “uno scorcio promettente” di ciò che verrà. Favorisce le pure espressioni di Clairette dei complessi suoli di Gigondas, anche se l’uva rappresenta ancora almeno il 70% dell’assemblaggio. Tuttavia, i 2023, secondo Castaing, hanno “freschezza, tensione e complessità straordinarie”, esemplificando “l’eleganza e la purezza che Gigondas Blanc ricerca, bilanciando struttura e vivacità”.

Vinous – Nicolas Greinacher A Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Nicolas Greinacher di Vinous trova che il 2023 “promette di essere un anno delizioso sia per i rossi che per i bianchi”. Coprendo la stagione di crescita, nota che i siti più argillosi hanno avuto migliori risultati rispetto ai suoli più sabbiosi, trattenendo l’umidità chiave durante il caldo dell’anno. Ritiene i rossi di questa appellation da buoni a molto buoni, più accessibili dei 2022, e “sebbene generalmente non destinati a durare quanto i 2022, i migliori 2023 sono fatti per durare”. Li trova “attraenti”, “profumati” e “succosi”. Per i bianchi, li considera generosi nello stile – pari ai rossi in qualità, con acidità più brillante rispetto ai 2022. 
 Nel Rodano settentrionale, i rossi sono – scrive – “sorprendentemente freschi, calmi ed equilibrati”, con frutta matura e “tannini gentili”. Non sono strutturati e longevi come i 2022, ma più aperti e accessibili in gioventù, con “vini eccellenti in ogni appellation destinati a durare”. Côte-Rôtie si distingue quest’anno per vini “inquietantemente eleganti”, mentre Cornas offre vini di “austerità granitica, polposità, audacia e concentrazione aromatica elevata” (pur non essendo “blockbuster”). Saint-Joseph è più vario, mentre i bianchi di Condrieu sono per lo più “vivaci, freschi ed espressivi, sebbene non precisi ed eleganti come nel 2021”.

A nord, Lawther trova il 2023 “più elegante e accessibile” rispetto al potere e concentrazione delle annate 2018, 2019, 2020 e 2022. I rossi hanno generalmente basso alcol (massimo 13%), con pH relativamente alti, ma risultano molto freschi, con tannini morbidi e frutta “succosa e golosa” – offrendo un profilo più “classico”, secondo lui. Côte-Rôtie ha prodotto alcuni dei migliori vini della vendemmia, più coerenti di Cornas, Crozes-Hermitage (entrambi con grandine) o Saint-Joseph, pieni di “equilibrio e fascino anche se non destinati a lungo invecchiamento”. 
 Al sud, la storia è diversa, secondo Cooper – un anno definito da condizioni calde e secche. Pur producendo alcuni “rossi di altissima qualità” a Châteauneuf-du-Pape, la selezione è fondamentale, con alcuni vini troppo dolci e alcolici, sebbene i migliori siano eccellenti, con potenza e concentrazione. I migliori bianchi dell’appellation offrono freschezza e mineralità, anche se alcuni tendono alla morbidezza, rendendo le date di raccolta cruciali. Cooper nota qualità variabile in Vacqueyras e Gigondas – per quest’ultima in parte a causa dei suoli più sabbiosi, meno capaci di trattenere acqua nell’anno secco. In generale, tuttavia, i crus meridionali hanno prodotto “vini in gran parte di buona qualità” – con Cairanne, Lirac e Rasteau in particolare ospiti di “vini equilibrati e attraenti in abbondanza”.

Xavier Vignon could best be described as a maverick winemaker whose inquisitive mind and extraordinary experiments have taken him on journeys all around the world, working on some of the must cutting-edge developments in today’s burgeoning wine scene. Initiated into oenology from a scientific background he has always had the benefit of operating free from the shackles of tradition yet now in his 40th year as a winemaker, his wealth of experience has seen him integrate his science with sensibility, developing an appreciation of producing wine in its most natural form.  We spoke to an initially noticeably weary Xavier Vignon, who is still recovering from a fairly serious bout of COVID-19. However, as soon as he starts to talk about his current projects he becomes distinctly more animated as he begins to describe all the fascinating projects he is currently working on.  This is a vigneron who clearly cannot stay still for long and has a huge drive and enthusiasm for his work. In fact, in his early days as a vigneron he was on the move all over the world working in Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, California for half of the year whilst returning to his native France to work through the harvest in the northern hemisphere. He carried out 40 harvests in 20 years.  His winemaking career started in Champagne before exploring the other wine regions of France, working in Alsace and Bordeaux among others. Coming from a family of stonemasons whose philosophy was to travel when young, he was encouraged to explore the world before settling down. These travels and the variety of experiences working in oenology from one country and climate to the next are surely a vital part of the puzzle for Xavier’s success as a winemaker. It was the Rhône Valley that finally stopped him in his tracks. Admitting he had never really
been interested in the wines of the Southern Rhône, hence the reason he arrived there later in his career, only to find that it had everything he was looking for. A huge variety of terroirs, varying altitudes, an array of grape varieties. This meant lots of freedom in blending (reminding him of his work in Champagne) lots of work on tannins (harking back to Bordeaux) and working in warmer climates of the new world. He was well-prepped to take on the region, setting up his own laboratory and consultancy practice initially advising for 20 – 25 winemakers before it expanded to over 500 in the region. Minerality, water and wine Xavier’s technical skills certainly helped many traditional vignerons to develop their wine
for global export but it also gave Xavier a tremendous opportunity to explore the multitude of wines throughout the region. Xavier became fascinated with things that were clearly evident in tasting so many wines of the region, which his scientific background couldn’t always explain. “Minerality” for example, is a term bandied around wine circles everywhere you go. We all know it exists but science cannot tell us what it is. It is not clear that we even all think it is the same thing, Xavier claims.  He was part of an extensive global research paper exploring what consumers and wine professionals identify as “minerality”. The study interviewed 5,000 consumers and 5,000 professionals resulting in no clear evidence that people were talking about the same thing. The only clear answer was that Chablis had minerality! Half the study thought more about smell, 50% thought about flavour. There is no definition still states Xavier. But this began his fascination with water and for him the key to understanding the secrets of minerality – despite him knowingly accepting he had no scientific data to prove it. This was his first step towards trusting his sensibilities over scientific analysis. For him you need to look to water to understand minerality. 85% of wine is water, water is
a huge proportion of what we taste, he states. Xavier looks to mineral water companies, even beer and whisky companies who have invested much more analysis on the affects of water, than the wine industry, largely because they have more money to do so, but also because water plays a much bigger role in their taste profile (in beer water is 90-95% water compared to wine which technically is 100% grape juice).  In their analysis of mineral salt, bottled mineral waters from different parts of the world have distinctly different levels of each mineral affecting the flavour of the water. Beer companies have also accepted that their beers made in different factories around the world taste different depending on where they are made because of the composition of the water. Whisky famously is obsessed by the quality of its water in regard to the final flavour profile of each distillery.  "So why not wine too?", asks Xavier. In different parts of the Rhône he identifies how high levels of silica in a wine makes the wine taste more acidic. How different chloride minerals provide a flavour of salinity in the wine, magnesium creates bitterness and so on. Scientific analysis doesn’t register the difference, but the difference is extraordinarily apparent when tasting. The effect of water is intrinsic, Xavier believes, to the strong mineral flavours of the Southern Rhône. The wines of the region could never taste like they do elsewhere because of the effect of the mistral. The mistral wind in places (particularly Châteauneuf-du-Pape) is so strong that it evaporates water from the berries, heightening the concentrations of mineral salts the grapes have absorbed in the water from the ground whilst the water evaporates from the berries. Xavier believes Gigondas, where the vines tend to be more protected from the mistral due to the protection of the hills, is less mineral for that reason. Xavier’s fascination with the effects of water on wine was a big reason why he began his
Arcane series, a set of one-off wines that are produced with minimal manipulation. He looks back at some regions he has worked in, stating parts of California and Australia require one to one and a half tonnes of irrigated water just to produce one bottle of wine. This is crazy! Whilst we have the science and technology for this to work, it doesn’t make sense. The Arcane Series of wines by Xavier The first wine made from the Arcane series was called “Le Diable” – translates as “the devil”. It came about when one of the vignerons he was advising took him to a high altitude Mourvèdre vineyard. The winemaker now in his eighties had struggled his whole life to get the Mourvèdre this high up to ripen, never achieving the results to use in his final wine. Xavier convinced the vigneron not to harvest the grapes with the rest of his crop, to leave the grapes on the vine and to see what happens.  It was 2015, a very late harvest already Xavier recalls but this extended Indian summer caused something in the vineyard they couldn’t believe. As the grapes continued to ripen and sugars increase, the acidity also started to go up as well! They had never seen anything like it. Xavier convinced the grower to sell him the grapes and produced the wine made just from these grapes. Xavier took the wine back to the elderly grower, who on tasting the wine began to cry. In his lifetime he had never been able to produce a wine from the vineyard, particularly not a 100% Mourvèdre!  Xavier named it Le Diable, the nickname of the Mourvèdre in the Southern Rhône because it was so difficult to ripen. Xavier knew that what happened in 2015 was unlikely to be repeated. This was a wine that made itself. It was vines in the perfect place at the perfect time and this is what he wanted the Arcane series to represent. Ever since, the Arcane series (now in its 6th and 7th cuvee to be released in the next few weeks) are complete one offs never to be repeated. The story behind the Arcane series informed Xavier’s winemaking philosophy ever since. Whilst he believes we can use science and technology to manipulate wines, he wanted to move away from this, preferring nature to tell him where and when he should make the wine. That hasn’t stopped him experimenting however and there are plenty of other cuvées that
show off Xavier’s inquisitive scientific brain operating at full speed. He is currently working with a winery in Turkey that wants to produce a wine free of any manipulation. Not only organically and biodynamically grown, natural yeasts etc but they even want the fermentation and maturation vessel to have no impact on the wine – he came up with the “vinarium” – a dark glass tank for fermentation and maturation – a natural product that does not infuse any flavour in the wine.  His next experiment is to get rid of closures altogether by extending the neck of the bottle and melting the glass at the top to seal the wine without any other material such as cork to affect the flavour. He eventually wants to create individual wines from individual vines!  He is experimenting with ageing wines both in the ocean and with his own invention of submerging a tank of wine within another bigger tank of wine. He does this with his Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Ange, comparing the process to a baby in a womb, completely protected from the outside world.  He believes you can age wine like this for 50 years without any need for sulphides or racking because there is 100% humidity and an even atmospheric pressure on the wine all the time. It’s an expensive operation and for the moment not possible for all his wines. But the level of experimentation and inquisitiveness gives you a good impression the sort of lengths Xavier will go to to push the boundaries of modern winemaking. He has no problem blending a Châteauneuf-du-Pape with a Côtes du Rhône village cuvee to make it a better wine only for it to be downgraded to a Vin de France because a Châteauneuf-du-Pape cannot be included in a blend and be titled Côtes du Rhône Villages. His interest lies in how it tastes, accentuating the multifaceted variety and complexity that exists in the Southern Rhône, rather than the traditional restraints of the appellation system. Xavier Vignon: A Rhône radical

Per Marelise Niemann, il richiamo del vino risiede proprio in ciò che potrebbe frustrare i viticoltori meno intuitivi. “Non sei mai in controllo: sei sempre messo al tuo posto,” dice – dal meteo, dai babbuini che mangiano l’uva, dalla natura. Per quanto possa essere umiliante, Niemann ha fatto del Grenache la sua missione – creando le espressioni più fini ed eleganti di quest’uva in Sudafrica, sotto la sua etichetta Momento. 
 Non sorprende, dato lo stile dei suoi vini, che sia stata un’annata in Borgogna a rappresentare per lei l’illuminazione. All’epoca, alla fine degli anni 2000, il Sudafrica era ancora concentrato sulla produzione di vini potenti: i rossi corposi, estratti e molto legnosi erano considerati i migliori. L’influenza di Parker era ancora palpabile, e il Paese stava ancora riprendendosi dall’apartheid e dal soffocante monopolio della KWV. Ma un periodo trascorso a lavorare con il Pinot Noir fece comprendere a Niemann il potere sorprendente e talvolta incongruo della delicatezza – in breve, che più grande non significa sempre migliore. 
 E non era la sola a percorrere quella strada. Il movimento della New Wave sudafricana stava prendendo slancio. Guidati da figure come Eben Sadie, Adi Badenhorst e Chris e Andrea Mullineux, questi produttori stavano creando vini freschi e raffinati, reinventando l’identità vinicola del Paese. Quello che era iniziato nello Swartland si diffuse presto in tutta la nazione, e Niemann faceva parte di questa ondata di rinnovamento. Fu l’agricoltura a spingerla verso il vino, dopo aver trascorso l’infanzia nella fattoria dei nonni a Stanford, un piccolo villaggio nell’Overberg, svegliandosi all’alba per mungere le mucche o fare qualsiasi altra cosa fosse necessaria. Anche se i suoi genitori avevano abbandonato l’agricoltura, lei desiderava lavorare la terra. Crescendo a Elgin, una zona dominata dalle mele ma con un’industria vinicola nascente, decise di studiare viticoltura. Le lunghe nottate universitarie a Stellenbosch, accompagnate da molte bottiglie, la convinsero che coltivare l’uva non fosse abbastanza, e così ampliò il suo percorso di studi includendo l’enologia. 
 Dopo aver viaggiato per il mondo e fatto vendemmie nel Rodano e in California, ottenne un lavoro accanto a Sebastian Beaumont – che aveva appena preso in mano la tenuta di famiglia, Beaumont Family Wines. Fu lì, spiega, che poté “disimparare” tutto ciò che aveva letto nei libri. Durante quel periodo, continuò a viaggiare e a lavorare alle vendemmie nell’emisfero nord – inclusa la già citata esperienza in Borgogna. 
 Sebbene il Pinot Noir fosse la sua ispirazione, ciò che cercava davvero era la freschezza e la vivacità, più che il vitigno stesso – ben consapevole che gran parte del Sudafrica è semplicemente troppo calda e secca per il Pinot. Un viaggio a Terroir al Limit (il progetto nel Priorat fondato da Dominik Huber ed Eben Sadie nel 2001) nel 2010 fu determinante. Si innamorò all’istante delle splendide vecchie viti di Garnacha della regione e degli stili più leggeri che Huber e Sadie stavano producendo. 
 Tornò subito e cercò una parcella di Grenache nel Capo Occidentale. Comprò due tonnellate d’uva da un vigneto di 50 anni nello Swartland insieme a Donovan Rall (di Rall Wines); lui raccolse i grappoli e li trasportò a Stellenbosch, dove li nascosero clandestinamente in una cella frigorifera universitaria grazie a un amico, e poi lei li portò a Beaumont. La vinificazione fu minimale, in parte perché era impegnata con i vini di Beaumont e non aveva attrezzature, ma anche perché volle seguire ciò che il vigneto offriva naturalmente, puntando su uno stile più leggero e profumato. Nacque così la prima annata di Momento Grenache. Era il 2011, e prima ancora che avesse deciso un nome o pensato all’etichetta per le bottiglie, il vino venne scelto per la famosa degustazione Young Guns. (Suo marito – artista – disegnò la vite che si vede oggi sull’etichetta, con volti nel tronco, perché per Niemann il vino non è solo un fatto tecnico, ma riguarda le persone – sia quelle che lo producono sia quelle che lo bevono.)
  Un decennio dopo, Momento si è guadagnato una notevole reputazione. Niemann è stata nominata Young Winemaker of the Year da Tim Atkin MW nel suo South Africa Report 2023, e i critici lodano i suoi vini, definendola una “sussurratrice di Grenache” (come l’ha chiamata Malu Lambert su Decanter). Sebbene Niemann produca anche un blend di Chenin Blanc/Verdelho e un Tinta Barocca, il cuore della gamma Momento è il Grenache – con versioni di Grenache Gris e Blanc, oltre a diverse etichette di Grenache Noir. Non sorprende, dato lo stile fine, fragrante e fresco dei suoi vini, che le sue ispirazioni siano Rayas (ovviamente), ma anche i vini della Sierra de Gredos (come Comando G) e le versioni più fini e moderne provenienti dall’Australia – come Yangarra o S.C. Pannell. Con l’annata 2022, ha introdotto tre nuove espressioni single-site di Grenache Noir, aggiungendo un’imbottigliatura da scisti di Botrivier, una da arenarie di Piekenierskloof e una da scisti di Riebeekberg, accanto al suo vino del Paardeberg (in precedenza etichettato come Swartland o Western Cape, su granito). L’idea è mostrare cosa può fare il Grenache in Sudafrica, raccontando i diversi suoli ma mantenendo sempre la sua firma: vivacità e delicatezza. 
 Per Niemann, il Grenache e le altre varietà con cui lavora non sono scelte casuali, ma vitigni sostenibili per il clima sudafricano. Quasi tutti i vigneti con cui collabora sono dry-farmed (ce n’è solo uno che sta gradualmente disabituando all’irrigazione). Ricorda la siccità del 2015-2018, con la minaccia del “Day Zero”, quando nessuno poteva irrigare le viti: rammenta come il Cabernet e il Merlot dei vigneti vicini si arresero, offrendo pochissimo raccolto, ma non fu così per il suo Grenache, che “continuò semplicemente a vivere”. Come dice lei, “Ci sarà un altro Day Zero in Sudafrica. Diventerà più caldo e più secco. Dobbiamo coltivare varietà che non abbiano bisogno di irrigazione.” Uve come Grenache, Chenin e Verdelho, insieme a Cinsault e Carignan, sono – per lei – la risposta. “È ciò che il nostro clima vuole che piantiamo,” afferma. 
 Una cosa è certa: se questo è il futuro del vino sudafricano, è incredibilmente entusiasmante. Dimenticate il Grenache ad alta gradazione e dolciastro; i vini di Niemann sono fini, freschi, strutturati, profumati e puri – vini che parlano del loro luogo d’origine. Le allocazioni delle sue cuvée single-site sono scomparse quasi istantaneamente al rilascio – e non c’è dubbio che la sua stella continuerà a brillare. Accaparratevi queste bottiglie finché potete.

A marzo di quest'anno, Opus One ha annunciato l'assunzione di Meghan Zobeck come Direttrice della Vinificazione. È il primo passo nella transizione, poiché l'enologo di lunga data Michael Silacci intende lasciare l'azienda nei prossimi cinque anni. Silacci è in Opus dal 2001 ed è oggi una vera e propria leggenda nella valle: trovare un successore adatto non è un compito da poco. 
Zobeck non era necessariamente la scelta ovvia. Ha scalato rapidamente i ranghi dell'élite vinicola di Napa, ma è entrata nel mondo del vino solo nel 2012. Quel passaggio è stato un atto di fede per Zobeck, un atto insolito per qualcuno immerso nel mondo della NFL. 
Zobeck è cresciuta a Greeley, in Colorado, "una città di contadini", come lei stessa l'ha definita, ma che per puro caso era anche il luogo in cui i Denver Broncos tenevano i loro ritiri di allenamento ogni anno. Durante il liceo, ha trascorso le sue estati lavorando per la squadra, come facevano molti locali. Frequentò l'università (poi la facoltà di medicina), ma continuò a lavorare per i Broncos, passando a tempo pieno mentre studiava per gli esami MCAT. 
Durante l'ultimo anno di università, fece uno stage con la squadra, lavorando con gli osservatori e sedendosi nella "war room" il giorno del draft. "Adoravo l'azione, il ritmo veloce", dice. Più o meno nello stesso periodo, si rese conto che la medicina non faceva per lei: accettò invece un ruolo nella negoziazione dei contratti dei giocatori per i Broncos, diventando una delle poche donne a ricoprire quel ruolo, e ne fu entusiasta. Fu un viaggio di fine settimana a Los Olivos, nella Santa Ynez Valley, a far nascere il suo interesse per il vino e, più specificamente, per la vinificazione. Tornata a casa, trovò un annuncio su una rivista locale per un negozio di birra artigianale, che offriva la possibilità di acquistare uva durante la vendemmia. Ben presto si mise a sperimentare, fermentando lotti di vino nella sua cantina e organizzando feste di imbottigliamento con gli amici. "Ho visto come unisse davvero le persone", dice. Ha viaggiato in altre regioni vinicole e si è innamorata del modo in cui il vino combinava scienza, creatività, storia e comunità. La NFL le era stata utile, ma era giunto il momento di fare il grande passo e lasciarsi i Broncos alle spalle. 
Ha prodotto la sua prima vendemmia a Clos Apalta nel 2012 e non si è più voltata indietro: ha vendemmiato in Piemonte, Bordeaux e Barossa, prima di concentrarsi su Napa, prima presso Stag's Leap Wine Cellars e Screaming Eagle, poi ha accettato un incarico con il consulente di punta Philippe Melka. Più recentemente, Zobeck è stata enologa presso Burgess Cellars, dove ha avuto carta bianca per plasmare i vini, dalla vigna alla cantina. 
Zobeck ha incontrato per la prima volta Michael Silacci al Premiere Napa Valley, il suo primo a mostrare campioni di botti di Burgess. Silacci è venuto ad assaggiare e poi, in una chiara dimostrazione di approvazione, ha continuato a consigliarle altri. Zobeck si stava concentrando su uno stile di vino più fresco, un ritorno al Burgess di un tempo, ma stava anche lavorando a un approccio rigenerativo in vigna, e presto scoprì che il team di Opus One stava conducendo esperimenti simili. Lei e Kimberlee Marinelli, Assistente Enologo e Viticoltrice di Opus One, si misero in contatto e iniziarono a discutere di tutto, dagli impollinatori ai fermenti autoctoni. Zobeck fu colpita dalla chiara mancanza di compiacimento da parte di una proprietà che non aveva bisogno di dimostrare ulteriormente il suo valore. Non immaginava che Silacci stesse osservando ciò che stava facendo con particolare interesse, e decise che avrebbe potuto essere l'erede al suo trono. 
"È un lavoro che non penseresti mai, nemmeno tra un milione di anni, di poter trovare", racconta Zobeck del momento in cui le fu proposto di diventare Direttore della Vinificazione di Opus One. Non avrebbe certo rifiutato un'opportunità del genere, soprattutto quando avrebbe avuto la possibilità di lavorare con Silacci per diversi anni. Zobeck raccoglierà l'eredità di Silacci presso Opus One, una tenuta in continua evoluzione durante il suo mandato. L'agricoltura biologica è stata la norma presso Opus per oltre due decenni, sebbene l'azienda abbia richiesto la certificazione solo nel 2021. Per oltre un decennio, Silacci ha sperimentato la biodinamica, ma ha scoperto che le viti erano diventate troppo vigorose. Ha abbandonato l'approccio prima di lanciarsi nell'agricoltura rigenerativa a partire dal 2022. L'azienda ora utilizza colture di copertura permanenti tra le viti, contribuendo ad abbassare le temperature nelle chiome, trattenere l'acqua nei terreni e allungare il periodo di maturazione, senza aumentare i livelli di zucchero. Silacci ha sperimentato l'agricoltura a secco dal 2007 e ha ridotto l'irrigazione in tutta la tenuta, sebbene per ora rimanga essenziale. Il team spera, tuttavia, di poter avviare un nuovo sito di coltivazione a secco a Oakville una volta che le viti saranno stabilizzate. Tutto questo lavoro si riflette nei vini prodotti oggi. 
"Opus One non è la Napa stereotipata dei primi anni 2000", sottolinea Zobeck. "È uno stile fresco, e per mantenerlo dobbiamo coltivare in modo diverso". Silacci è famoso per aver detto di non voler lasciare le sue impronte nel vigneto o le sue dita sul vetro, ma Zobeck nota come la sua influenza su Opus One sia evidente nel corso degli anni, soprattutto a partire dal 2004. Dal 2019, tuttavia, Ritiene che il vino si sia evoluto ulteriormente, con una maggiore trasparenza del sito. L'annata 2023 è appena stata imbottigliata con una modesta gradazione alcolica del 13,5%, indicativa dell'attuale approccio della tenuta, che intende proseguire. 
Silacci prevede di rimanere per almeno tre anni, lavorando al fianco di Zobeck come enologo capo. Un periodo di transizione di questa durata testimonia la visione a lungo termine di Opus One, che non guarda solo alla prossima annata, ma al prossimo decennio e oltre. L'entusiasmo di Zobeck per il ruolo è evidente, così come la sua ammirazione per la squadra attuale. Come nella NFL, un buon capitano è fondamentale, ma ci vuole più di un giocatore per vincere una partita, e Zobeck completa una formazione già impressionante. È un passaggio di consegne davvero notevole.

Originariamente una joint venture tra Robert Mondavi e Ch. Mouton Rothschild, Opus One è una delle tenute più famose di Napa e ora ha un nuovo Direttore della Vinificazione. Abbiamo incontrato Meghan Zobeck per saperne di più sull'ex campionessa della NFL che ha preso il posto di Michael Silacci.

It was the vision of Jacques Perrin in particular – who farmed the property organically from 1950 onwards – that cemented Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s Château de Beaucastel reputation. Today his sons – Jean-Pierre and François – are at the helm, with fifth-generation Marc, Pierre, Thomas, Cécile (Jean-Pierre’s children) and Charles, Mathieu and César (sons of François) also all work full-time at the estate. All seven of the children worked in wineries around the world before returning to the family estate.  A visionary estate The estate was one of the first in Southern Rhône to become organic (in 1950) and then biodynamic (in 1974), making the vineyard better prepared than most for the climate change effects over the last 30 years.  “Beaucastel is the largest Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate in one contiguous plot and it stands at the most northern limit of the appellation. It is a vineyard which is therefore very exposed to the Mistral winds, which has a huge cooling-down effect,” Emmanuel explains, protecting the vineyard from extreme temperatures.  The vineyard is based on a limestone bench covered by a rather atypical mix of clay and sand, topped with diluvium “galets roulés” (pudding stones). It is an incredible terroir that, Emmanuel explains, “allows us to combine power and finesse even in the driest vintages. It has always been considered a benchmark terroir in the area and was in fact a cru before the Châteauneuf appellation was created.”  
The biodynamically farmed old vines have also helped offset the ever-increasing drought pressures in the region. “We are extremely fortunate to have older vines,” Emmanuel says. “The galet roulés covering our vineyards also help prevent water evaporation. So all in all we’ve managed to make great wines even in warmest and driest vintages.” That hasn’t stopped the domaine, however, from continuing to adapt their methods to better cope with the ever-present threat of climate change. “We are learning more and more every year and continue to implement changes we deem necessary.” Alcohol levels in the region have undoubtedly risen, an effect that the estate looks to counter. 
When Jacques Perrin was in charge, he created a very specific vinification technique which he later patented. He would heat up the must to 80˚C, to start fermentation quickly while allowing Jacques to use less Sulphur, helping fix the colour of the wine, particularly with the Mourvèdre grape which has a tendency to lose colour with age. But this method also reduced the greener flavours in the wine, that came from less ripe grapes. 
Today’s climate, however, does not face the same issues, with consistently riper fruit. As a result François and César have phased out this technique, instead opting to whole-berry fermentation, and even whole-cluster ferments for varieties like Syrah, to naturally reduce alcohol levels. These days they also pick earlier, opting for more freshness whereas in the past it was always the goal to maximise ripeness, something that no longer is an issue for the region.  “The estate is always looking at ways to counter the issues of climate change,” Emmanuel continues. “For example, some of the younger Syrah vines are today producing very powerful wines so we are either co-ferment with some Grenache, reincorporating some of the stems in the vat or carry out whole-cluster fermenting,” helping to find better balance in
the wines. In the vineyard too, the team is constantly looking for ways to improve. “We recently tried spraying clay on leaves to limit photosynthesis,” Emmanuel says. The initial experiments have proved positive, but it is still too early to see the long-term effects on the wine
and requires further testing. 
But this experimental approach is everywhere in the property. They continuously make alternate blends that they age in the Beaucastel cellar and over time compare with their main cuvées to see how well the final blend develops versus a different potential version of
the same wine: Emmanuel states the cellars are full of these experiments. 
The domaine has also been assessing how the Beaucastel wines age with different fining techniques. “We do a lot of comparative tastings and assessing of older experimentations. For example, we recently did a horizontal of Château de Beaucastel 1996, where each bottle was fined differently, and identified which fining technique works best for ageing the wine – this is crucial in the development of our knowledge and helps us to make sure decisions taken in the moment are the best ones for the future.” 
Hommage à Jacques Perrin What is distinctive about Château de Beaucastel and the Hommage cuvée in particular is the high proportion of Mourvèdre in the blend. The Hommage is typically made up of 60% Mourvèdre. Emmanuel explains, “Hommage is from our Courrieux lieu-dit parcel, where Mourvèdre was first replanted (post-phylloxera) in 1910. As Mourvèdre is such a late-ripening
varietal, Château de Beaucastel needs an outstanding Indian summer to hope for an Hommage vintage. The decision thereafter is taken during the blending tastings. 
“When tasting the foudre of Courrieux back in 1989, François and Jean-Pierre were overwhelmed by the outstanding quality and knew that it had to be bottled on its own. Jacques Perrin’s intuition for the best blend from the estate revolved around a dominant proportion of Mourvèdre. As a tribute to their visionary father, they followed his instinct and
dedicated this unique cuvée to him.”  Production remains tiny despite the huge demand for the wine. In recent vintages, production has been around 6,000 bottles per year. The only difference in the vinification process of Hommage versus their other cuvées is an extra six months’ ageing in 4,000-litre foudres. All the winemaking is fairly hands-off, vinifying all the varieties separately apart from the Muscardin, Vaccarèse and Terret Noir which – due to the tiny quantities – are co-fermented. The reductive varieties – Syrah and Mourvèdre – are fermented in open-top wood fermenters and the remaining oxidative varieties are fermented in concrete tanks prior to the all-important blending sessions with the family.  The 2018 vintage has already been fantastically reviewed, awarded a potential perfect 100 points from the Wine Advocate, with reviewer Joe Czerwinski describing it as “full-bodied
but incredibly silky, combining great purity, richness and length into a seamless, elegant package that should give immense pleasure for decades to come.” The success of the 2018 vintage, according to Emmanuel, was “down to the perfect ripening conditions in mid-October, allowing them to bring the grapes of this late-ripening variety in at perfect maturity – 2018 was fantastic for Mourvèdre.” 
The grapes of the Southern Rhône 
Château de Beaucastel proudly uses all 13 permitted varieties of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Some even say 18 varieties, since varieties like Grenache, Terret, Clairette and Piquepoul all have a black, pink and grey clone of the variety mixed within the vineyards. “Each variety brings its own attributes that differ depending on the vintage, but also depending on the amount you use or the blend you make,” says Emmanuel. “For example, when you open a young Beaucastel, it’s very Grenache-driven, even when there is a similar percentage of Mourvèdre. It’s only few years later that Mourvèdre will finally come to the
