Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2025-2045, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, Aug 2025

The 2023 Old Hill Ranch Heritage comes from vines planted to more than 30 grape varieties in the mid-1880s and farmed organically since the 1950s. Grapes were harvested on October sixth, and the blend is dominated by Zinfandel. The nose is bursting with aromas of chocolate-covered cherries, aniseed, thyme and floral perfume. The medium-bodied palate is delicately styled, its nuanced flavors framed by soft, chalky tannins and mouthwatering acidity, and it has a long, layered finish.

The 2023 Zinfandel Old Hill Ranch Heritage is sourced from a site one mile north of Bedrock Vineyard in the Sonoma Valley. The site features over 35 co-planted varieties, with nearly 12% Grenache, and while that may seem like a small percentage, it shines brightly in the fabric of this wine. The nose is beautiful, with notes of herbes de Provence, garrigue, preserved strawberries, and wildflowers. The palate is elegant and refined, with a long finish that is only going to improve over the next 15 or so years. This might be one of my favorite wines from this tasting.

The 2023 Old Hill Heritage Wine soars from the glass with lifted aromatics. Bright red-toned fruit, spice, mint, blood orange, cinnamon, cedar and new leather are all beautifully sculpted in this nuanced, captivating red blend. This field blend of more than 30 varieties is so aromatically intense. Painstakingly tended to by the Bucklin family, Old Hill is quite simply one of the most pedigreed vineyard sites in the United States. What a gorgeous wine this is.
