The dark ruby/purple-colored 1996 Clos de la Roche reveals beguiling aromas of perfume, violets, blackberries, and juniper-smoked bacon. It is medium-to-full-bodied and offers a chewy-textured flavor profile filled with fresh cherries, licorice, raspberries, road tar, and blueberries. It is massively concentrated, intense, powerful, and possesses an amazingly long, pure finish. This complete wine's harmony and extravagant personality is something to savor. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015+

Dark ruby-red. Powerful black fruit and mineral nose suggests tiny dark berries; less animal than normal for this cuvee. Intensely flavored, primary and backward, with bracing but ripe acids. Voluminous but closed in on itself. Great core of spicy, dark berry fruit. Extremely long, palate-staining finish. I get more fruit than soil tones today, and I suspect this wine will retain its fruit for many, many years while the terroir expresses itself.
