Clerget’s 2015 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens is also very good, wafting from the glass with youthful aromas of red cherry, sweet spice and subtle notes of rich soil. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, richly tannic and supple, with considerable volume and depth, and plenty of savory nuance despite its ample endowment of sweet, ripe fruit. In terms of finesse and energy, this Rugiens doesn’t quite attain the heights of the Volnay Caillerets, but it, too, is a promising prospect for the cellar.

(from two parcels in Rugiens Bas, the lower of which is 80 years old; the estate also has a 15-year-old parcel in Rugiens Haut, the fruit from which it continues to sell off to Henri Boillot): Bright, dark red-ruby. Very closed but pure aromas of redcurrant, spices and tobacco. Dense, juicy and fine-grained, offering lovely flavor intensity and inner-mouth floral lift. A bit youthfully imploded, this is a Rugiens of brooding power. And its savory, firm tannins are less fleshy and harmonious than those of the Volnay Clos du Verseuil.
The 2015 Pommard Rugiens is another super-expressive wine. Rich, pliant and wonderfully giving, the Rugiens is built on a serious core of fruity intensity. Black cherry jam, lavender, menthol and spice build into the supple, extroverted finish. I very much like the wine's immediacy, not to mention its impeccable overall balance.
