The 1985 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru might well constitute the solitary great wine from this decade, with so much more purity on the nose than in other vintages. There is definition and freshness here, decayed red fruit mixes with sage and light morel scents. The palate is very well balanced with tannins that seem totally different from other vintages in this era. Pastille-like purity, this "dances" towards the finish with blood orange and desiccated orange peel hints. Fine length and weight, this is a delightful mature Pommard. Tasted at the Clos des Epeneaux vertical in London.

As Serena Sutcliffe says in her excellent Pocket Guide to the Wines of Burgundy, this wine "is for those who say that present burgundy is too light." The 1985 has a dense, rich, ruby/purple color, a big, oaky, plummy, intense bouquet, significant flavor interest, and considerable body. Anticipated maturity: 1992-1998.
