The 1988 Phelan-Segur is lighter than the 1989, but is still a textbook example of a St.-Estephe. A toasty, black currant-scented bouquet is followed by a medium-bodied wine with fine balance and length. It has less aging potential than the 1989. Anticipated maturity: Now-1997. Last tasted, 4/91.

With 70 hectares under vine, Ch. Phélan Ségur sits on the eastern side of Saint-Estèphe – neighbouring Montrose and Calon Ségur. Owned by Philippe van de Vyvere since 2017, its gravel soils produce typically firm wines.
