Novello. Beautiful mid ruby with orange tinges. Very pretty but so very closed on the nose. Pretty compact on the palate too with a solid but fine tannic structure. Classic and quite pure. Orange, cherry and black-tea notes. Hint of oatmeal. Precise and long and minerally, and very backward at the moment. (WS)

(100% lampia, planted in the original part of the Ravera cru; this spent 30 months in large casks and is just being released now in Italy): Medium bright red. Subdued aromas of currant and menthol open to reveal higher-pitched notes of red cherry, rose petal and white pepper. Serious, dry and rich, with a touch of austerity to the flavors of red fruits, menthol and licorice. Comes across as drier than the 2007 Ravera, with a more serious tannic structure: "more difficult to understand," according to Nadia Fissore. The wine's finishing medicinal toughness will require several years of additional cellaring.

The 2006 Barolo Bricco Pernice is one of the very finest wines I have ever tasted from Cogno. It shows marvelous detail, focus and sheer energy in a deceptively medium-bodied style. Layers of dark cherries, plums, menthol and licorice emerge from the glass. The wine continues to grow as its imposing structure becomes more evident with the passage of time. There is considerable detail in the glass, not to mention phenomenal overall balance. This is a fabulous showing.

Walter Fissore and Nadia Cogno continue to do fabulous work. Cogno is one of the very finest estates in Piedmont, yet somehow remains under the radar. Every wine I tasted this year was brilliant, but the Baroli in particular are magnificent. The wines are made in a fairly traditional style, which means they need bottle age, even at the entry-level. Native yeasts, lengthy submerged-cap macerations, and a reliance on large, neutral oak casks for the top Baroli are the rule. Importer: Vias Imports, New York, NY; tel. (212) 629-0200
