The 1990 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is one of the highlights of the era. It has a disarmingly gorgeous nose with brambly red fruit, a touch of peppermint and sage, all exquisitely defined and gaining cohesion with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine bead of acidity, glistening with vivacity and energy. Few 1990 Côte de Nuits have this sense of tension and the delineation on the finish is brilliant. Superb.

Lignier’s 1990 Clos de la Roche is everything mature Burgundy should be. Silky, nuanced and perfumed, the 1990 is stunningly beautiful. The 1990 also shows quite a bit of restrain for the vintage. What comes through above all else is the personality of Clos de la Roche. Crushed flowers, dried cherries, tobacco, mint and underbrush add the closing shades of nuance. I don’t expect the 1990 to improve much from here, but it is striking today.
The ruby-colored robe of the 1990 Clos de la Roche is beginning to show touches of amber on the edge. The wine reveals a rich, spicy nose of cedar and blackberries. On the palate, this full-bodied, broad, fat, and velvety-textured wine is packed with tobacco, cedar, spice, and super-ripe dark fruit flavors. Its plump, supple tannins, and palate-coating, dense character are a hedonist's dream while its complexity and refinement are made-to-order for those searching out intellectual delights. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.
