Good dark red, with a hint of greenish-amber at the rim. Alluring aromas of ripe plum, animal fur and coffee torrefaction. Plush, silky wine with a seriously mouthfilling texture and a deep spiciness. Very densely packed and classically dry--and a bit massive for Griottes-Chambertin. Finishes with serious tannins that dust the front teeth. To my palate, this wine is approaching maturity but Pierre-Jean Roty would still wait another five years. I'm not sure it will gain in sweetness but it did grow plummier with air and should continue to age on its tannic spine.

The sublime, dark ruby-colored 1999 Griotte-Chambertin was aged in 80-90% new oak. Its black cherry and blackberry-scented nose leads to a full-bodied personality that has magnificent breadth and concentration. This powerful wine coats the palate with layers of jammy blackberries, cassis liqueur, licorice, and smoked bacon. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2016.
