Punteggio 88/100 · Da bere 2021-2025, Neal Martin, Feb 2022

Served from magnum, the 1983 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a beguiling leather, iodine and pine-scented nose, though with aeration it soon fades and feels a little static compared directly with the 1978. The palate does feel quite chaptalized but it seems to gain a modicum of complexity with aeration. Pretty, if solid, decent for the vintage.

Lignier’s 1983 Clos de la Roche is a model of elegance, restraint and finesse. Quite simply, this is a gorgeous wine for a vintage that was notoriously affected by rot. Crushed flowers, mint and red cherry notes are nicely delineated in a fully mature, tertiary Burgundy that stands out for its silkiness and overall poise. The 1983 is also the first vintage made with a new sorting table that appears to have come in quite handy.

Lignier's 1983 Clos de la Roche is a success story from a nefarious year. While most 1983s reek of rot and have dried out to reveal rustic, rough tannins, this ruby/amber-colored wine has pure sweet black fruit aromas. It is medium-bodied, fresh, and extremely well-made, revealing ripe black cherries and cedar flavors in its character. Projected maturity: now.
