Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2023-2033, Jeb Dunnuck, Oct 2023

A great bottle (I've had others that were more evolved), the 1982 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron is healthy ruby-hued with no dramatic signs of bricking and has a mature yet still lively style in its currant, damp earth, tobacco, leather, and subtle smoky nuances. Medium-bodied on the palate, it's nicely balanced, has a supple, elegant mouthfeel, and outstanding length on the finish. It's certainly fully mature and not going to get better, but it's a classic, satisfying Pauillac to enjoy over the coming decade.

Magnum. Looks more evolved than the Las Cases 1982. This was from which era? Not probably at the estate’s peak. Smooth and supple and at a lovely point in its evolution. The alcohol is just a little obvious on the end. This won’t last as long as the Las Cases but it’s tasting beautifully now. Long and mellifluous. Perhaps the magnum size helps the showing of this wine…? Such a beautiful finish. (JR)

Mulberry fruit and more obvious acidity than the Pichon Lalande 1982 served alongside and with further to go. It really opened up in the glass to become denser and richer than the Pichon Lalande. (JR)

Magnum. Tasted blind alongside Pichon Lalande 1982 which looked less evolved than this. Sweet, ripe nose with a palate that is just starting to dry out slightly. But it could still deliver a great deal of pleasure. (JR)
