The 2019 Syrah Oregon Gargantua is a beast: peppery, floral, meaty, nearly bloody, packed full of crushed olive, blackberries, smoke and ashen stone notes lifted by hints of sweet sage. It floods the palate with ripe black fruits and savory herbal tones, as vibrant acidity adds balance and salty minerals saturate, all supported by medium-weight textures. The mouth is left watering for more as fine tannins frame the experience and hints of salted licorice slowly fade. This smoky and savory Syrah would be hard to place in a blind tasting, but Joh Bergstrom said it quite eloquently, "It's Oregon."

Deep ruby-purple, the 2019 Syrah Oregon has generous aromas of cassis, cracked pepper, black olive, charcuterie and bitter chocolate with touches of iron and violet. The full-bodied palate is chalky and fresh with concentrated yet detailed, spicy flavors, and it has a long, floral finish.
The 2019 Syrah Oregon offers some blue fruit in this youthful stage, with blackberry liqueur, macerated purple flowers, and dark mineral earth. It is very open and generous, with perfume that lasts for ages on the palate. This is delicious right out of the gate, but I would hold it another couple years and drink 2024-2034. Since 2013, winemaker Josh Bergstrom (of Bergstrom Wines) has been selecting from vineyard sites dedicated to Syrah in Oregon, California, and Washington to produce his Gargantua wines.
