Madera's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve features cedary, pine-like nuances and hints of vanilla set against a backdrop of blueberries and blackberries. Medium to full-bodied, with masses of soft, ripe tannins, a deep, almost creamy mouthfeel and a lingering finish, this is already reasonably flattering for a mountain wine but should age well. The pricing actually seems realistic when set against the quality and limited production (189 cases).

Aged 22 months in 93% new French oak, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve plays in the massive, concentrated, inky style of this estate, yet it brings more nuances and complexity. Pure crème de cassis, new leather, burning embers, and graphite, as well as a huge sense of minerality, all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a deep, concentrated mouthfeel, building tannins, and a great finish. It's another incredibly impressive release from this team, and its purity, density, and overall massive style remind me of a great vintage of Château Lynch-Bages. Hide bottles for 7-8 years and enjoy over the following two decades.
