Punteggio 88/100 · Da bere 2013-2018, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Aug 2013

Banfi's 2008 Brunello di Montalcino wraps around the palate with black fruit, tobacco, smoke, licorice and new leather. An attractive mid-weight wine, the 2008 should drink nicely for at least a handful of years. The 2008 shows lovely density and richness for the year, with hints of smoke, licorice and tobacco that add complexity on the close. This is a fabulous effort considering a production level of around 500,000 bottles, a staggering sum by virtually any standard.

I tasted a number of new wines from Castello Banfi this year. The estate seems to be differentiating their wines a little more than in the past into an entry-level line and a more prestigious Poggio alle Mura range, which has now been enhanced with the addition of a new Rosso and non-Riserva Poggio alle Mura Brunello. I have to say the new Poggio alle Mura wines are distinctive and highly appealing. Importer: Banfi Vintners, Glen Head, NY; tel. (516) 626-9200

Concentrated ruby with orange rim. Ripe and mature nose showing the first signs of tobacco. Quite tannic, and with high-pitched acidity. Good potential, but ends quite dry. (WS)
