While La Fleur de Gay did make a 1991, at the time of this report it was uncertain as to whether it will be released in the American market. The wine has turned out well for the vintage, displaying a solid medium ruby color, and a spicy, ripe, blackcurrant-scented nose infused judiciously with smoky new oak. Medium-bodied, with low acidity, this pleasant, straightforward wine will drink well for 4-7 years.

The 1991 La Fleur de Gay suffered frost damage on the 20th and 21st of April when temperatures plummeted to -7° Celsius. Harvest began on October 1st and finished within two days. It was also the first vintage where the malolactic fermentation was done in barrel. The nose is fresh and composed with dark berry, black truffle and mint tea aromas. The palate is very impressive for the vintage, with ample ripeness and a firm, supple tannic backbone. This is fresh and delineated toward the finish with good length. Only 10-15 barrels were made, so it should be treated as a small victory, but a victory nonetheless. Tasted June 2011. Tasting note taken from the Pomerol book by Neal Martin.
