Medium red. Smoke and meat on the nose, with autumnal notes of underbrush and mushroom. Fatter, richer and sweeter than the Fremiets, with lovely mid-palate shape. Finishes with dusty, even, sweeter tannins. Showing very well today, which came as a shock to winemaker Renaud de Villette, who said the 2001s were very hard, and difficult to taste, following the February bottling. But then this vineyard was less affected by hail than the Fremiets.

Cask sample. Pale at the moment. Too early to tell. Quite rich, ripe nose with some concentration. Quite full. Almost opulent. Quite tough tannins insinuate themselves. Very much work in progress. (JR)
Medium red. Cooler on the nose than the Fremiets but not especially vibrant. A bit sweeter and suppler, with more evidence of structure and less dryness on the back. Not sharply delineated but fresher and fruitier than the Fremiets.

Marquis d'Angerville is synonymous with the village of Volnay, having long made some of the village’s finest wines. Best known for its Premier Cru monopole vineyard, Clos des Ducs, this estate crafts fine-boned, elegant styles of Pinot Noir – wines that act as standard-bearers for the appellation.
