Another Côte Rôtie lookalike is the 2016 Syrah Baker Ranch, which I suspect saw loads of stems and was brought up in neutral barrels. Raspberries, cranberries, rose petals, violets, and hints of meatiness give way to a medium to light-bodied Syrah that has plenty of tannin, impressive balance, and a lengthy, polished, elegant style that’s a joy to drink. It should keep for 7-8 years. I had a great tasting with winemaker Wells Gunthrie and these latest releases show elegant, vibrant profiles. These aren’t for those craving powerful, rich wines, and they shine for their purity of fruit, balanced, and singular personalities.

The 2016 Syrah Baker Ranch is layered and supple in the glass. Floral and savory notes from the 100% whole clusters give the wine its distinctive aromatic signatures. In 2016, the Baker Ranch is wonderfully polished, nuanced and understated.
