Brilliant ruby. Lively aromas of cherry, ripe red berries and pungent flowers, along with a smoky mineral nuance that builds in the glass. Sappy bitter cherry and raspberry flavors are joined by lavender and exotic spice nuances that build steadily on the back half. Fine-grained tannins contribute shape and grip to a lively, persistent finish that features resonating floral and spice notes.

Moving to the 2017s, mostly from bottle, the 2017 Patelin De Tablas is a classic Rhône look-alike from Paso Robles that has plenty of black cherry and peppery herb aromas and flavors as well as medium body, light tannin, good acidity, and a clean finish. Based on 48% Syrah, 32% Grenache, 16% Mourvedre, and 4% Counoise, drink it over the coming 4-5 years. While there’s plenty to like in the lineup, I was unquestionably disappointed in the 2017s from Tablas Creek. This was the poorest showing I’ve seen from this estate to date and compared to past vintages, the wines are simple and lack concentration. It gives me no pleasure to say it as it’s a great team and great people, but the wines should be better.
Pale to medium ruby, the 2017 Patelin de Tablas is made up of 48% Syrah, 32% Grenache, 16% Mourvèdre and 4% Counoise. It opens with a touch of tarry reduction, slowly giving way to wild blackberries, black cherries, chargrill, potpourri and blue fruit hints with a spicy undercurrent. It's light to medium-bodied, intense and earthy with juicy acidity and a long, berry-laced finish. 3,580 cases produced.
44% Garnacha Blanca, 29% Viognier, 12% Marsanne, 12% Roussanne, 3% Clairette. Very perfumed with a slightly sweet floral impression. Not perhaps the depth and savour of a white Châteuneuf but very competently made. Tastes off dry, and just slightly astringent on the end. (JR)
