The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino (100% Sangiovese brought up 10% new Slovenian oak) sports a deep ruby color as well as lots of spice and sandalwood notes supported by ample ripe cherry fruits, unsmoked tobacco, graphite and dried earth aromas and flavors. Elegant, forward, medium to full-bodied, and ready to go, drink this beautiful Brunello anytime over the coming decade.

Montalcino Sud. Bright deep crimson and very artfully packaged. Sweet, ripe nose – California style! Very sweet start. Fast fade on the finish. Dry tannins but well done if you yearn for a big robust Brunello. (JR)

Luce della Vita is a second important brand owned by the Frescobaldi family in Montalcino. Their other historic estate is the Tenuta Castelgiocondo with a beautiful villa overlooking the vineyards. The Luce brand does extremely well in foreign markets thanks to its elegant marketing and packaging. The Luce della Vite 2012 Brunello di Montalcino sees an annual production of approximately 25,000 bottles. The wine is styled with contemporary flair. The color is richly saturated and inky dark with bright ruby highlights. The color is very attractive. Bold cherry and blackberry emerge from the bouquet, and there's a generous amount of oak spice and toast to speak to an international palate. Integrated oak tannins are folded within the wine's rich and fruity consistency.

Tasted blind. Dark ruby with bright orange rim. Lifted, minty cherry nose. Modern approach yet quite pure, with crunchy cherry fruit and hints of oak. Hedonistic and well made while the firm tannins give it plenty of potential, too. Long! (WS)
