The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Galets Blonds is composed of 85% Grenache, 12% Syrah, and the rest Mourvedre. It exhibits a deep ruby/purple color as well as classic notes of creme de cassis, kirsch, licorice, spice box, pepper, and truffles. Full-bodied with layers of fruit, lovely sweetness, sweet tannin, and a lusty, heady, hedonistic finish, it should provide plenty of pleasure over the next 15+ years. Patrick Lesec’s negociant operation is artisinal in nature, small, well-focused, and consistently reliable. The high point of the portfolio is unquestionably his Chateauneuf du Papes. Deep red. Vibrant, floral-kissed cherry and dark berry aromas are complemented by anise, garrigue and espresso elements. Stains the palate with deep, sweet cassis and bitter cherry flavors, picking up chewy tannins on the finish. Awfully suave and already complex. This is 93% grenache and 7% syrah, with all the grenache emanating from very old vines in La Crau, according to Lesec.
