Licorice, black cherries, smoke and vanilla bean aromas are hard to avoid. The wine is rich, fat and juicy on the palate, finishing with fresh, sweet, fleshy dark berries. This could improve with a year or two in the bottle. 91 Points

Firm tannins provide the backbone in the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Mountain Estate Vineyard. Layered dark blue/purplish fruit, sweet herbs, tobacco, incense and tar come to life in a powerful, structured Cabernet Sauvignon from Fisher's Sonoma County estate. The 2009 boasts implosive fruit, equally vibrant minerality and fabulous overall balance. I can't wait to see how it ages.

Fisher Vineyards is very much a family affair. Fred and Juelle Fisher founded the winery in 1973 and have since been joined by their three children. Whitney Fisher handles the winemaking duties, her brother Cameron takes care of sales and their brother Rob runs the business as General Manager. The Fishers own two estates. Their Napa Valley property, located in Calistoga, is the source of the flagship Cabernets Coach Insignia and Lamb Vineyard, as well as the Cameron, a young vines bottling. The Spring Mountain estate, which is on the Sonoma side of the appellation, is the source of the Wedding Vineyard and Mountain Estate Vineyard Cabernets, as well as the Chardonnays. Once again, I was deeply impressed with the wines I tasted. Fisher Vineyards remains one of California’s undiscovered jewels. Tel. (707) 539-7511

(includes 4% cabernet franc and 1% merlot): Opaque violet. Intense cherry and blackcurrant aromas are complicated by smoky herb, tobacco and mineral nuances. Broad and pliant, offering open-knit dark berry preserve flavors are given bite by a gentle peppery quality. Sweet and velvety on the finish, leaving cherry and licorice notes behind.
