Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2014-2024, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Feb 2014

Deeper in color, with additional richness and depth on the palate, the 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes, which is 70% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah, gives up ample sweet currant, blackberry, roasted herbs, licorice and assorted meatiness in its medium to full-bodied profile. Textured, balanced and drinking nicely, it should hold for a number of years (which is when I’d drink it), and evolve gracefully through 2024. This traditionally run estate covers roughly 13 hectares and is run by Corinne and Yannick Gasparri. Their 2004s are all approachable and relatively mature, and in my view, best consumed over the coming 3-5 of years.

Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2009-2016, Jeb Dunnuck, Apr 2009

The flagship 2004 Domaine de la Côte de l’Ange Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes is primarily old vine grenache from vines averaging 80 years of age and offers up beautiful aromas of cassis and blackberry fruit mixed with licorice, herbs, garrigue and a slight sauvage note that keeps you coming back for another sniff. Think duck fat or pate and you’re close. The palate is medium bodied and balanced with plenty of richness and a slightly rustic, savory texture. While this lacks some mid-palate depth, it fills in with air (decant if drinking anytime soon) and shows ripe tannin and solid structure on the long finish.

Dark red. Ripe cherry and dark berry aromas accented by chocolate and licorice. Lush and supple in texture, with smoky cherry and blackberry flavors enlivened by cracked pepper and garrigue Finishes powerful and very ripe, with expansive, liqueur-like sweetness. Serve this big boy with a grilled hunk of red meat.

Deep red. Rich, pungent, earthy aromas of dark berries, roasted coffee, cocoa powder and woodsmoke. Lush and concentrated, with intense flavors of dark berry compote, mocha, candied licorice and cracked pepper. At once sweet and structured, this boasts excellent palate coverage and finishes on a gently tannic, sweet cherry note.
