The 2023 Chardonnay Platt Vineyard is stellar. Rich and ample in the glass, the 2023 is beautifully layered. As always, Platt is distinguished by its textural intensity and creamy, vibrant personality. Crushed rocks, sage, mint and citrus are some of the notes that race across the palate. This vivid, transparent Chardonnay is a total stunner.

A bright yellow hue, the 2023 Chardonnay Platt Vineyard takes things up a level and is savory on the nose with notes of flinty crushed stones and sea spray. The palate is long and has fantastic, pure lemon oil citrus notes on the back palate that drive the wine and keep things laser focused. Delivering full-bodied richness and a ton of completeness, it’s one of the highlights of the vintage. It’s incredible now and should have a long window for enjoyment over the coming 10-12 years. It comes from nearly 25-year-old vines. Owned by Thomas Rivers Brown and Genevieve Marie Welsh and based in Calistoga, Rivers Marie specializes in single varietal, single vineyard expressions of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon. One of Sonoma's most prolific winemakers and consultants, Thomas Rivers Brown grew up in South Carolina and later went on to work at Turley before carving his own path forward. I met with Thomas and Will Segui, the assistant winemaker, at the Calistoga winery this spring to taste the wines for this report.
