The 2018 La Haye has a light earthy nose that is typical Saint-Estèphe, but lacks a bit of charm, maybe. The palate is medium-bodied with sour cherry on the entry and a light metallic trait. I’ve encountered decent vintages of this in the past, but this 2018 left me perplexed.

The 2018 La Haye is quite pretty and expressive. Sweet pipe tobacco, cedar and earthy notes give this supple, fruity Saint-Estèphe Cru Bourgeois lovely aromatic presence. Ripe red cherry, iron and dried rose petal linger nicely. There's a lot to like in this understated, nuanced 2018.
From the Cardon family. 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot from 40- to 50-year-old vines on deep gravel and clay. Cold soak for four to seven days. Vatted for 14 to 21 days. Malo in tank. Matured for 14 months for Cabernet and 12 months for Merlot in barriques (46% new). Deepish healthy crimson. Very firm, concentrated and fresh on the nose. Very St-Estèphe even if a little more precocious than some. Really fresh and vigorous. Lots of ripe fruit and lots of polished tannin followed by impressive length. GV (JR)
