Punteggio 89+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2014

(aged in 85% new oak; made from the most powerful, structured block on the estate's steep rocky site on Pritchard Hill): Bright medium ruby. The lushest, densest and sweetest of this set of 2011s, with flavors of blackberry, black cherry, violet and bitter chocolate oak complicated by menthol and licorice. Finishes slightly tart, with firm, increasingly chewy tannins in need of a couple years of bottle age.

Montagna's 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon La Presa One South is a gorgeous wine, but it needs time to fully come together. In 2011, La Presa stands out for a sense of tension and a crystalline purity that is simply striking. Readers should be prepared to give the 2011 a few years in bottle. Today the wine is a bit compact and medium in body, but I expect it will flesh out nicely in time. The finish is subtle and understated.

The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate La Presa One South has lovely depth good balance. Red berries, flowers and mint are some of the notes that flesh out in the glass. Montagna has done a great job with the 2011 La Presa South.

Montagna has done a great job with the 2011 La Presa South. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. Montagna is Bob Long’s new project on Pritchard Hill, not far from David Arthur, which Bob founded with his brother David. Nile Zacherle, the winemaker at David Arthur, is also in charge at Montagna. These early releases suggest Montagna is another of the rising stars in Napa’s hottest neighborhood. Tel. (707) 963-5190
