Note di degustazione
The 2013 Syrah Originals is developing into a highly appealing wine. Time in bottle has brought out a level of refinement the 2013 did not show when it was younger. Floral, lifted and savory, the 2013 offers lovely delicacy but also plenty of dark Ballard Canyon fruit. Rose petal, lavender and sweet red plum add the closing shades of nuance. The Originals is quite subtle within the context of the vintage.

The 2013 Syrah Originals, from the estate's oldest, dry-farmed vines, is beautifully lifted and subtle in the glass. Dark red plum, cherry pit, orange peel, mint, spice and pomegranate all take shape. The Originals is more delicate and high-toned than the Estate, but it doesn't quite have that wine's persistence or complexity. Still, the overall sense of harmony is beyond reproach. The Originals spent around three weeks on the skins and was aged in 500L barrels. Whole cluster inclusion was 60%.
What's becoming the flagship Syrah for the estate, the 2013 Syrah Originals Estate comes from the original planting of the estate from 1992. It offers more texture, depth, richness and elegance over the Estate Syrah and possesses beautiful notes of creme de cassis, barbecue smoke, crushed pepper and violets. Medium to full-bodied, ripe and textured, yet always pure and balanced, it will have a decade of longevity.
Confected, candied and cooked fruit. Authentic spice and pleasingly firm tannic structure, but that fruit quality is jammy and unsubtle. (RH)
