The 2005 Taurasi Riserva Vigna Cinque Querce is showing a gorgeous expression of ripe dark fruits, savory seared meats, earth, minerals and wild herbs on the nose. On the palate, medium weight textures are lifted by zesty acids as tart black fruits, savory spice and hints of black olive give way to youthful tannin. The finish is long, structured and spicy, making me wonder just how many years it will take for this to be perfectly ready to drink. It's already enjoyable today, but I have a feeling that a case tucked away in the cellar for another five to ten years will yield some serious rewards.

As impressive as the wine's concentration is, frankly I find it hard to justify the premium the Riserva commands over the regular bottling. Readers in search of seamless opulence will find much to admire here. Sadly, much of the varietal character seems to have taken a back seat to the search for size and textural richness.
