Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2023-2036, Neal Martin, Mar 2021

The 2018 Château de Chambrun is leaps and bounds better than when I tasted it from barrel, so much so that I wonder whether that barrel was representative. This has a lovely floral bouquet of well-defined, violet- and peony-tinged blackberry and bilberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine weight and much more elegance that I could imagine. Having pilloried it before, I do not hesitate to give what I think is a more representative score.

The Merlot-dominated 2018 Château De Chambrun (there's 22% Cabernet Franc) hails from the Lalande de Pomerol appellation. Its ruby/purple hue is followed by a ripe, sexy bouquet of mulberries, black cherries, wildflowers, and creamy oak. Medium to full-bodied and beautifully balanced, it has a stacked mid-palate, loads of sweet red, black, and blue fruits, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It's another one of those hidden gems readers will love. Drink bottles any time over the coming 10-12 years.

The 2018 de Chambrun is bold and exuberant right out of the glass. A rush of sweet floral notes and red berry fruit makes a strong opening statement. Silky, aromatic and persistent, Chambrun is a good choice for drinking over the next handful of years. Élevage has really helped the 2018 come together.

78% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc. Sister property to Ch Moncets whose vines have an avrage age of 52 years apparently. Gravity-flow cellar. 10 thermally regulated concrete vats for 10 different plots. Integral vinification in barrel for 25% of the production. Aged 16 to 18 months in barrels, 40% new and 60% second use. Pale crimson. Very light nose. Rather pronounced acidity. Everything on paper looks so perfect but in the glass it's not, unfortunately. It's positively tart without much fruit impact on the mid palate and a rather stringy finish. (JR)
