Punteggio 93-95/100 · Jeb Dunnuck, May 2025

Coming from 8 hectares of pure limestone soils located on the upper plateau, just beside the village, the 2024 Château Villemaurine has a beautiful perfume of black raspberries, cassis, chalky minerality, and liquid violets. Medium-bodied on the palate, it's nicely concentrated, with ripe, polished tannins and integrated acidity, making for an incredible success in the vintage. Its purity, balance, minerality, and length are impressive. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

83% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Cask sample. Robust and a little chunky. Bit too much extraction. Chewy tannins with a dry finish. Falls away. (JL)

The 2024 Villemaurine has quite a forthright bouquet with ample red berry fruit, crushed rose petals and light brown spice and mocha aromas. A bit chewy, the palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins and more density than its peers (higher extraction?), though there is decent length. A second bottle shows more edginess and freshness, prompting me to just upgrade my score to the one shown.

Good purity and restraint of fruit with dark cherries, roasted herbs and a touch of incense. Medium-bodied, this has firm, chalky tannins. It’s juicy and crunchy in the middle, followed by a long, refined finish. This shows potential.
