The Terreus is pure Tinto Fino from a single vineyard of ancient vines, most likely over 100 years old. The 2008 Terreus has an intense, tightly coiled bouquet with blackberry, boysenberry, fresh fig and blueberry all with fine delineation and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins. The balance and poise are immediately noticeable, the texture silky smooth and focused with notes of black cherry and espresso lingering on the aftertaste. This is a classy wine, albeit one with a price. Drink 2013-2022. Bodegas Mauro is owned by Alberto and Eduardo Garcia. Their vineyards are predominantly located on the left bank of the Duero River, although due to historical local politics their sites are excluded from the DO of Ribera del Duero. They have apparently come to terms with that and are, of course, able to work without the restrictions imposed by authorities. They own 55 hectares of vines, mostly Tinto Fino on north facing slopes at 780 meters above sea level. Importer: Christopher Cannan; www.europvin.com

(made from a blend of tempranillo and garnacha and raised in new French oak for 30 months): Glass-staining ruby. Sexy, intense aromas of raspberry liqueur, cherry-cola, incense and violet, with smoke and vanilla accents. Lush, seamless and broad on the palate, offering sweet red and dark berry flavors and accents of bitter cherry and vanilla. Dusty tannins add grip to the finish but fade into the fruit, which lingers persuasively. This wine drinks very nicely with a brief decanting.
