Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2023-2038, Jeb Dunnuck, Oct 2023

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Père Pape is another elegant wine from this talented family. Based on 100% Grenache from the Les Bédines, Bois Dauphin, and La Crau lieux-dits, it has a medium-bodied, elegant, almost Burgundian style as well as gorgeous aromatics of sweet black raspberries, Provençal garrigue, and some classic minerality. It's not massive by any means, but it shines for its purity, elegance, and balance. It's beautifully done and will evolve for 10-15 years. Vignobles Mayard, which was previously run by sisters Francois Roumieux-Mayard and Béatrice Mayard, has now been split into two estates, with Françoise Roumieux leaving to make her own wine under the Clos du Calvaire label. Vignobles Mayard has been renamed Domaine Mayard and is now managed by Béatrice, Arthur and Hugo Mayard. These latest releases from Francois show the fresher, elegant style of the vintage and shine for their classic aromatics and overall balance.

The 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Clos du Calvaire practically exudes ripe raspberry and cherry fruit on the nose. It's medium to full-bodied and framed by supple tannins, but isn't that concentrated. Enjoy this easy-drinking blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre and small amounts of Cinsault and Counoise over the next decade.

The Grenache-only 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Père Pape matured for two years in a combination of foudre and terracotta jars. Checking in at 15.5% alcohol, the 2020 Père Pape soars from the glass with ripe red and black fruit aromas mingled with hints of dried herbs, licorice and mint. Full-bodied and refined, the taster is left with a bold finish.
