The 2016 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has an entrancing and intense bouquet that bursts with Morello cherries, blueberry, hints of violet and blackcurrant pastilles. There is wonderful delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin, a fine bead of acidity, the most Bonnes-Mares of the Bonnes-Mares in this flight. It has the exuberance of a de Vogüé, but it transpires to be from Dominique Lagune around the corner. Wonderful. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

Cask sample. Deepish cherry red with purple rim. Like the Chambolle Charmes, this soars from the glass with lightly spiced, intense cherry fruit. Very pure and upright without being in the least severe. Deep, chewy and satisfying. (JH)
(vinified in a ten-hectoliter wood cuve ; the estate's vines, in rows that descend from Les Veroilles, are predominantly on white soil; one-third of them were planted in 1931: the estate made a normal 36 hectoliters per hectare in 2016 despite a lot of tiny, millerandé grapes): Saturated ruby! Very ripe, almost liqueur-like aromas of black raspberry, crushed rock and tropical dark chocolate. Plush, sweet and spicy, offering terrific fruit intensity to its blueberry, blackberry and black raspberry flavors. This highly concentrated wine finishes with superb mounting chocolatey persistence. Not the last word in finesse but this is the deepest and most filled in of the Hudelot-Baillet 2016s. This essentially pliant Bonnes-Mares should age on its serious stuffing and fully ripe tannins.
